Bando Fun Sale

Our trip is quickly approaching and I have almost all my shopping done. I still need to get our camera serviced *looking for recommendations*. I’m on the fence about buying an external flash but I may end up buying it from Target. There are some things I am ordering from Amazon like backpacks, headphones for Liv and some electrical outlet converters, so fun.

I’ve had a wishlist of things from Ban.do I wanted for the trip so last week at Cake Club when Christina mentioned they were having Ban.do studio sale I knew it was meant to be.

I made this floral crown a few days ago
I got there at 10:30 and we were maybe 15th in line

After the sale we headed around the corner to the Paul Smith pink wall for a quick photo shoot with my new heart clutch, pouf and piñata.

Merci Ban.do, I look forward to wearing my pretties in Paris!!

London Calling

Last time we went to London was in 2003. We were there for only four days. I didn’t have an itinerary planned so we just winged it and did all the usual tourist things. We used a travel agency *I’m surprised they are still around* to book our trip so we stayed at a corporate hotel with a room the size of a closet. We had two twin beds so Aimee had her own bed and Antz and I shared a twin size bed. Let me repeat that, the both of us are a few inches shy of six feet tall and WE SHARED A TWIN BED FOR FOUR NIGHTS!!! My cell phone ended up getting fried from the electrical outlet converter and we only had about $100 to spend while we were there. I hated every single restaurant we picked except for Yo Sushi!

This was the first time I ever tried eel. Now I love it!

We were pretty miserable yet still it was the most fun we ever had in our lives. The experience was incredible and the three of us bonded in a way that no one could ever understand. We were young and on a serious budget back then. I’m glad we did it but now I’m older and I want to really enjoy our trip. I was very picky when it came to booking our hotels *because I wanted comfort and not to get scabies again!* I looked for something with a mix of eclectic boutique vibe but also the assurance of full amenities and service that you get with the corporate hotels.

My list of Must-Haves
King size comfy bed

Free Wi-fi

In our budget

I definitely did not want to stay in the tourist part of town. Here are a few of the cool hotels I considered.

This was my first choice because I am a fan of the W hotels. I knew it would be the perfect mix of corporate and boutique with incredible style. Here’s the problem, the location is smack in the middle of tourist central. I have to admit, this isn’t the most child-friendly option and the price was much too steep at £339 per night.

They have a Mad Hatter Tea *we may take Liv time permitting*

This hotel is so posh. I think it’s beautiful but it was booked for our nights and it’s very sexy. I’m not sexy enough to handle it. Onwards…

The Ampersand Hotel
The Ampersand Hotel

I am a big fan of ampersands and I thought this place was very stylish but even I think this place is too much. It seemed like it would be stuffy and so grown up. My Goldilocks syndrome was in full effect. I searched tons of places on Hotels.com. Most places were in our price range but had poor ratings, looked bloody boring or the rooms looked no bigger than a bread bin.

A Review of the Yotel In-Airport Boutique Hotels | Spot Cool Stuff: Travel
Yotel This place is located in at the airport. You can book it for a few hours just to nap, Genius!!!

The winner ended up being a familiar place with all the amenities and space I wanted. I got a good deal on the room since I bundled it with our airfare package from Expedia and I am stoked about the location. It’s definitely in a more authentic London side of town. I’m sure I will bump into Sir Banksy himself!

Hoppy Easter

I hope everyone had a lovely Easter. Last week Olivia received some special mail from her grandmommy Bobbye. She loved getting her own mail in the post.

Then her Grandmother Maria gave her a basket and Godmommy Aimee brought her a rad basket. Sunday morning the Easter bunny brought Liv a basket too. Three baskets for this kid!!

Liv was very pleased with her basket loot, she even got a Venus Flytrap plant!

We spent the day at Olivia’s Nino’s house for their annual Easter brunch and egg hunt.

So she hit me twice as hard and broke my head!

Thanks for the photobomb Antz

Then we stopped by Antz Mom’s house for a second and headed off to church. For the last 3 years we’ve been going to the afternoon mass and we love it. It’s so much less crowded and you have the rest of the evening to relax.

I won a Caption this contest that Leslie’s bakery *Brown Box Bakery* had last week!!

Leslie delivered my lovely carrot cake. It’s sooo pretty!

Since I was on a diet, I didn’t feel guilty for eating carrot cake since it’s gluten-free and diabetic-friendly. They have really good treats if you are needing a cake or cookies for someone with food restrictions or allergies.

LA Cake Club

We had so much fun at the second LA Cake Club this afternoon. I wanted to make something easy to eat and fun so of course I thought of everyone’s favorite treat…BACON!!

This will be the cover of my future baking cook book

I made mini maple bacon cupcakes. According to Aimee, Liv and Antz *my volunteer tasters* they were fantastic. I am so pleased with how they turned out, perfectly sweet and savoury.

This time Cake Club was held near my house at the cutest outdoor courtyard by a company called littlemeatsla. I bought a ton of Oh Joy for Target party supplies last month so I was able to use my new lovely cake stand.

#littlemeatsLA
This is how Cake Club usually starts

I was so happy to see some ladies from the first Cake Club but also met new friendly faces. The cakes and treats were mind-blowing delicious. Everyone made exotic tastes and impressive displays. I was overwhelmed by all the sugar goodness. Luckily, I brought most of the desserts home to share with Antz and Liv.

That incredible cake in the foreground had edible flowers!!

Olivia was super happy to play with my Instagram soulmate, Rachel’s sweet daughter. Of course Liv claimed her as an instant BFF!

Cheeky girls

The bffs made friends with two sweet older girls from Australia and their crazy adorable baby pug, Basil. They corrected me, “It’s Bah-sill!” The girls hung out with their new friends most of the time playing.

We all fell hard for this little guy

Rachel totally hooked me up with an amazing deal on my long sought after Miffy lamp. I was planning to go to the Miffy store in Amsterdam and bring it home on the plane but the lamp’s cord would be fitted for Europe. She gave me a discount code and free shipping at Giggle so I got an American one, so stoked!! Merci beaucoup Rachel.

Rach & me *we heart each other hard*
Check out how in sync we are!!

Just when I didn’t think the day could get any better, I was surprised to see my Instagram crush Christina show up with her awesome boyfriend Morgan! Her Instagram feed is colorfully gorgeous like she is!!

We have been following each other for months so it’s fun to finally meet in person. I am so blown away by her incredible photography.

Before I knew it, it was time to go. So much fun. I almost didn’t sign up since I have been so busy preparing for our trip but I am so happy I did. I feel so good seeing creative and fun people. If you are pretty good at baking, I recommend you follow the LA Cake club feed to find out when the next one is taking place. It’s a wonderful group of people.

My love made this lovely art of us. I love it like I love cake!

More Hotel Dramarama in Amsterdam

As a fan of the Roaming gnome, I began my travel search with Travelocity but for some reason they wouldn’t allow me to book the airline I wanted and the same itinerary was more expensive. Liv’s Godfather Stephen recommended using Expedia which they used for their trip to Europe last year so I gave them a chance. Monday I spent over two excruciating hours on the phone booking our trip to Europe with Expedia. I put together a crazy itinerary but the guy who helped me was incredible, everything was good until it was time to confirm our hotel in Amsterdam. For the strangest reason there is a limit of two guests maximum of hotel room occupancy for 90% of Amsterdam hotels. I can’t believe it! I called the hotel directly and told them about it and they were baffled as well. My issue was, in order to get a huge discount with Expedia, I had to book at least two hotels and two flights so we had to choose a different hotel than the one I really wanted. For obvious safety reasons, I am not going to disclose our travel dates or hotel info but these are the hotels we couldn’t book because of that silly rule.

Paris Apartment Hunting continues

Last night I was elated to have finally found the perfect apartment on Airbnb to rent in Paris for our trip. Lately, I have been looking strictly in le Marais because I wanted to be where the action is at. However, after scouring the 3rd and 4th arrondissements, I couldn’t find the right apartment. I broadened my search just outside of le marais and struck gold.

This apartment was too good to be true. The owners have a young daughter so Liv would have her own bedroom with cute toys. It was by far the largest apartment I’ve seen compared to the price of the tiny ones in le Marais. The beautiful hardwood floors and the crown molding really sold me. It was my perfect vision of our dream Parisian apartment. So I took a deep breath and booked it. I went to bed with a giant grin on my face. I didn’t even show Antz the photos because I wanted to surprise him.

Well, this morning I get an email from the owner and here’s what he said.

Hi Elizabeth and thank you for your message.

Unfortunetly we won’t be able to rent you the apartment because they
just started renovation in our building and for the next three months it´s
gonna be really noisy!

Hope you will find another place.

Best regards.

Ummm, wtf? I can’t believe my luck. Based on the photos, the building and the apartment are in perfect condition so I’m not sure this guy is being truthful with me. I am so bummed. I haven’t even come close to finding an equivalent apartment and now, I really don’t have the energy to keep looking. Every apartment I like is rented or too expensive. I wrote the owner back and said I wouldn’t mind the noise so hopefully he’ll reconsider. What bothers me most is his apartment is still listed for rent for all the dates except the ones I need it. If his apartment building is being renovated, why wouldn’t he block out the next 3 months? Sounds fishy, right?

I hope something equally amazing comes along but I don’t want to wait much longer and end up without an apartment. I still need to book our train tickets and convert our US dollars at the bank. I have been dreaming of this trip since Olivia was born so I am pretty stressed out that everything goes according to plan.

My bummed face

C’est la vie. I just did this…I hope it works.

Rustic charm vs Shabby chic

I keep starting to write posts and I haven’t published any. It’s not like I haven’t been busy lately, I just haven’t been in to mood to take as many photos because I need to take our Nikon SLR camera in for service. Using my iphone to take photos has left me feeling uninspired. I’m not sure if I should bite the bullet and buy a new camera or get mine fixed and buy this external flash. Well, I’m going to need a solution soon because we are taking a trip to Europe this summer.

We found this amazing secret garden in Pasadena called Arlington Garden

Honestly, I have been knee deep in planning this vacation. The last time I planned a big trip was over ten years ago so I’m rusty. There was no Pinterest, Instagram or blogs to reference back then which make it very hard to narrow down my options. I have been apartment hunting for a place in Paris for weeks now. I
am not exaggerating when I say I have looked at every single apartment
rental in le Marais. I want to find a place with Air bnb since it has the most legit site. The problem is my favorite apartments are not available for the dates I need. This was my original winner but of course, it’s booked. I have never been so picky in my life.

My top ten criteria is:

1. Location (Le Marais)
2. Haussmann building
3. Plenty of light and quiet (no lower floor units)
4. One bedroom/one bathroom
5. Clean furniture that doesn’t feel like dated *Parisians really like plaid bedding and red couches*
6. Washer/Dryer
7. City views
8. Chevron hardwood floors
9. Close to a metro station
10. All this within our budget!
* Dishwasher (a bonus)

I have narrowed it down to these top two contenders.

Let’s break it down. This apartment is within our budget, perfect location in
the heart of le Marais, has authentic Parisian charm *look at that beautiful building and courtyard* it has all the amenities we need. It doesn’t have my chevron hardwood floors but I do like the stone pavers. I google-mapped the street to find it is centrally located and even has cute graffiti.

The downside is, it’s a six story walk up with no elevator. That will get
old really fast but not a deal-breaker. The kitchen…is tiny! I don’t
think I can even open the oven door but who knows how much we will be
baking in the apartment. I am not a fan of the second floor bedroom. We
are very tall people and it appears there will be a whole lot of leaning
and possible head bumps in that slanted loft ceiling. I do like that
the bathroom is on the second floor since I have the bladder of a ninety
year old at night. I like the rustic feel but it may be more dated than I’m imagining it to be. I don’t know how comfortable we would be lounging.

Our other option is…

Shabby chic & cute in the 4º arrondissement

The kitchen is small but efficient

This
apartment is super cute. I like the quirky toys and the floors. It feels French shabby chic. My favorite is the dollhouse in the bedroom, I know Liv will love playing with that guy. The views are rad and there is an elevator in the building. I like the street it’s located on much better than the other place. The apartment also comes with a cat!

This apartment does have it’s downside, there is no fixed shower head in the bathroom, which Antz isn’t so happy about. It’s also a smoking apartment so I worry it will smell like smoke which grosses me out. Also as of three days ago, the host has yet to respond to my email inquiring about renting the place so I’m not sure if it’s available for the dates I want.

Liv is mega excited to eat French bread and ride the carousel

I cannot seem to make up my mind. The apartments are very close in location, size and price. I know I am being picky *Antz keeps reminding me, we aren’t going to be in the
apartment that often
* but I want to feel at home. I could just get a hotel room for the trip but I want total immersion. We are planning to go to London and Amsterdam too so I’ll post about that soon.

Bonsoir!!
