Mon trente- huit Anniversaire

My birthday was pretty rad! Aside from spending the day with my best friend in the city I love, I also went to an art show I have been wanting to see and had an awesome birthday dinner. I am so full of gratitude to my husband for giving me this incredible gift. I drank until I was dizzy and laughed so hard I cried.

Uncle Terry is a gross, little Midwestern perv but Aimee and I enjoy his photography. My favorite of his work is his shots of Marilyn Manson and his Daddy.

His show is totally out of place in Paris but I love how vulgar his art is.

Aimee wanted to pick up a gift for a friend so we walked to Le BHV Marais.

Day Two in Paris

Today was my birthday! I feel so grateful to spend it in such a magical place with my best friend. We are so happy. We spent the day exploring the city, eating, laughing so hard we cried and marveling over how we were in our favorite city together twelve years after our first trip. I have mastered navigating the Metro and I feel confident making my way around without any maps. Le Marais is my favorite part of town but I still found myself back in our old neighborhood in the 10th from our stay last June. I have been quite successful speaking French at restaurants and shops!

Paris March 2015 *Updated*

I flew out to Paris alone to surprise my BFF Aimee and spend my birthday in my favorite city!! She had no idea I was coming to visit her.

Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise: The Lost Photos

How creepy is it that while we were in Paris half of the photos I took at Pere Lachaise cemetary went mysteriously missing? Well, yesterday I finally took the plunge and restored my iPhone so I could upgrade to IOS 7. I was reluctant to do it since I am technologically challenged and I could have lost everything on my phone. I waited patiently for 3 hours for the restore to complete. I was able to successfully update my iPhone and everything on my iPhone
was backed up. I even was able to finally download the new Party Party app. I made my first video to celebrate National Lipstick Day. Then I panicked when my iPhoto decided to all of a sudden crash on my macbook. I had to repair my library but for some strange reason when iPhoto restarted there was a folder that said “Recovered Photos” Hmm, I opened it and found a bunch of old photos I had previously deleted but there was about 200 of the 400 photos I lost in Paris. Sweet! So now I can show some of the photos we took when we were at Pere Lachaise cemetary and our visit to a cute craft store La Doguerie and a few of rue Montorgueil *sadly the rest are still missing*

We had so much fun in here until one of the cranky clerks told us we couldn’t take photos. I never understand why some shop’s have that dumb policy.
rue Montorgueil is on of the most popular pedestrian streets in Paris. It’s similar to the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica.

Nope, we did not try any escargot!
What a pleasant surprise to find these photos!

La Tour Eiffel

Well, I’m going to give this another try. I was pretty devastated when I lost those photos but it was a valuable lesson learned. Always back up!

We visited the Eiffel Tower on a gorgeous sunny day. The tower is spectacular and standing underneath it makes you feel so small. It’s hard to describe iron as sexy but the curvy lines are so mesmerizing. I could stare at it all day *which we did* This was one of our favorite memories about our time in Paris. It’s the most touristy thing you can do but it’s also a rite a passage for any visitor to France.

We finally tore ourselves away from the La dame de fer *The Iron Lady* and decided instead of getting back on the hot metro, it was time for a leisurely river cruise.

Museum D’orsay

It was lovely to enjoy a sunny day after so much rain. We finished everything on my to-see list!

Le Dîner en Blanc Paris, France 2014

One of the coolest things we did last year was attend the first ever Dîner en Blanc in Beverly Hills. Going to the White Dinner in Paris has been on my Life List for some time now so earlier this year I reached out to the organizers of the DEB, casually asking if I happened to be in Paris when the dinner took place, would I be able to attend now that I was a member. Well, I didn’t expect a such quick response since the dinner is super exclusive and has over 13,000 people attend, I assumed it was a long shot. The same weekend I sent the email, I got responses from the organizers in Los Angeles, who then forwarded my email to the organizers in Paris. One day later I got an email directly from the son of the man who founded le Dîner en Blanc. He remembered me *and my heart headpiece* from last year. He responded that we could attend as his guests!

We found the most amazing sitter through a friend of mine. Caroline is American but has been living in Paris for a few years and speaks fluent French. She and Olivia hit it off fabulously! I knew we were leaving Olivia in safe hands. We borrowed a fold up table from our friends *thanks Warren & Kim* and luckily found some white chairs in the courtyard of the apartment we were staying. I brought most of our white dinner items from last year in my suitcase and borrowed tableware from our apartment. I couldn’t believe she didn’t have wine glasses or white dinner napkins so I had to buy some. We bought antique roses *since white peonies were no longer in season* and used a teapot for a vase. I found a pretty good sushi place, a fresh baguette, a bottle of Freixenet and pretty white tiramisu desserts.

I love this bag I bought from the arts district from Apolis

The most perfect sunset ever. I am so happy!

J’adore Paris, I’ll never forget this night.

This evening was enchanted. It was nothing compared to the Beverly Hills dinner with only 1,500 guests. I am so full of gratitude and overwhelmed with joy that I was able to participate in such an epic event. I am blown away by the coordination and cooperation it takes to bring over 13,000 people together for a lovely dinner in Paris. I am accomplishing so many things on my Life List during this trip, it just may be a good time to add more goals! For those of you who may not know what the dinner is, here is a video showing the inception and past years. I hope to attend le Dîner en Blanc in New York next!

Pere Lachaise – Let’s try this again

Rain shall not deter me from seeing the awesome graves at Pere Lachaise. We set out early and even figured out which Metro to take so we ended up at the closest entrance to Oscar Wilde’s tomb so we can hit it first. I brought my crimson lipstick along so I can plant one on there and hopefully not have my lips fall off from disease. When we last went, there was hardly anyone there and the dark, gray sky made for some creepy but perfect looking photos. We ended returning on the brightest sunniest day full of tourists and I was concerned the photos would end up too cheerful for the dark mood I was trying to set. Oh well, can’t fault a gorgeous day in Paris.

This is the final resting place of writer, playwright and famous poet Oscar Wilde
Oscar penned one of my favorite quotes “Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.” He also wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray
People have been kissing his tomb for years and in 2011 the cemetery staff decides to place plexiglass to deter the kissing. So lame! He gets an air kiss from Liz
J’adore Edith Piaf
Victor Noir’s crotch has an urban legend behind it
The famous lovers Abelard & Heloise

We also saw Moliere, Chopin and Jim Morrison but those photos were a part of my deleted batch that I am still mourning! Definitely one of my favorite places in Paris. I still need to return to see it all.

Pont des Arts / Notre Dame

Paris is well-known as the City of Love and romance is pumped through the
air. There is a legend that if you and your love put a lock on a bridge and throw the key into the river, your love with become eternal.
I’m down for the lock tradition but the reality is, the weight of the locks is damaging
the bridge and the rust from all the keys is harming the ecology of the Seine. The Pont des Arts bridge was originally built in 1804 but re-built in 1984. We were given a lock from my Mom that I knew would be perfect for the lock bridge. We carried it with us everyday in case we happened to be in the neighborhood of the bridge. Well, a few days ago, I get a lovely message from Aimee saying the Pont des Arts bridge has partially collapsed due to the weight of the padlocks. MERDE!

I have waited so long to add our lock and now the bridge was damaged? Just my luck! However, the French worked their magic and by yesterday the bridge was all fixed. I made this extremely shaky video of us adding our lock to the bridge.

DSC_4003

The only space we could find was to lock ours on top of another lock.

I’m serious when I say there must be a million locks on this guy!

We walked around the Latin Quarter which is home to Sorbonne University. It would be very cool if Olivia chose to study in Paris. I took this photo of her standing in front of Sorbonne as a gentle reminder.
If all goes according to plan, Olivia will be graduating from Sorbonne the same year Antz retires from work!! #keep the dream alive

Le Refuge des Fondues

These past few days have been rainy so we have been starting our days later than usual. I have tons of activities planned but we have enjoyed staying in our awesome apartment, making jambon et fromage sandwiches and drinking wine *orange jus for Liv* watching the lightening and rain through the skylights. The other night we had our first big hail/thunderstorm. It was terrifying. The hail was huge and we were sure it would break the skylight over our bed. I did not want my obituary to read, Died on vacation in Paris from broken glass shards.

The sky was like this all night, Liv was so excited to see lightening and hail. Here’s a video of me sounding like a major dork!

We waited for a break in the rain and headed back to Montmartre in the evening for a special dinner.  Refuge des Fondus has been a tourist staple for years. French people do not eat here. There is always a wait at this place no bigger than a closet with only two long tables, you must step on the table to get in. There are two choices on the menu, fromage or meat with red or white wine served in baby bottles *due to the heavy wine glass tax*. We happily chose one of each.

DSC_3684

DSC_3683

We only had to wait for five minutes for a table on a busy Saturday night. There was a live band playing across the street. Paris makes it hard to be grumpy.

This place is TEENY TINY! Lucky for me I didn’t have to step on the table to get to my seat but you sit elbow to elbow with other diners.

DSC_3696

Here is Liv making friends with the people next to us. They were visiting from Spain. Everyone in there was from a different country!

DSC_3726

There is a fixed menu of either meat or cheese, so we ordered one of each. We began with some tasty kir and an ensemble of appetizers.

DSC_3743
Santé! Don’t panic, Liv had a non-alcoholic apéritif.

Olivia was thrilled to drink from a baby bottle. It was weird but I guess a good thing because you couldn’t chug your wine.  They only have two options, white or red which both are mediocre, yet the atmosphere is so jovial, you don’t mind the terrible wine.

DSC_3771

DSC_3775DSC_3780

Our meat was just that, RAW MEAT. No seasoning and you get a vat of boiling oil to cook it in. It wasn’t bad but it was an extremely decadent meal.

DSC_3841DSC_3853We also had potatoes, four sauces and bread to dip.

The waiters are intentionally rude. I definitely understand having to wait on drunk foreigners all night long in a space the size of a bathroom but I warmed up to ours.

DSC_3805

DSC_3832

The fondue is enormous, more cheese than I would ever want to eat. Our friends Terry and Morgan make much better fondue but it was a fun dinner.

DSC_3858
Olivia didn’t nap earlier so she was out the rest of the night.

DSC_3908Our waiter gave us a free souvenir bottle for Liv as a gift. The food was so filling and the wine made me tipsy. It’s definitely something you should try once.

5 pm – 2 am

Cimetière du Père-Lachaise

I have always been fascinated with cemeteries. Most of the people in our family have been cremated so I’ve never had a relative to visit until I met my husband. I grew up across the street from a huge cemetery and I first learned how to drive there *no one to hit* Anthony and I have been to almost every cemetery in Los Angeles so of course we had to see the famous Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. So many French dignitaries are buried in this centuries old cemetery but it was not so popular in the beginning. I wanted to see Sarah Bernhardt, Balzac, Chopin, Molière, Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf, Héloïse & Abélard and of course kiss the tomb of Oscar Wilde. Before the graves, we went to lunch. We were craving pizza and the place I wanted to try *Pink Flamingo* was closed so we found a place nearby.

My head is unusually large
It was tasty
No photos please!
I never get tired of the colorful palette of Paris
It was on the verge of raining when we arrived at the cemetery
I bought a map and quickly headed for Wilde’s grave since it was the furthest away
The thunder and dark gray skies were the perfect backdrop for such a setting
In LA, the oldest cemeteries are early 1900s so it was rad to see graves dated back to the 1800s
Perfectly creepy, there were tombs with broken stained glass
Reminds me of the cemeteries in New Orleans
My photos may look bright and cheery but in person the place was dark and scary
Here comes the rain!
We were prepared and brought Liv’s wellies and raincoat. It’s been raining for days but it’s still very warm
Whoever this guy was, he was badass
Almost at Oscar’s tomb!
Just as we were coming up on his grave, the security guards rode up and told us they were closing the cemetery due to the rain. It was hardly raining and I asked him for 5 minutes but he wasn’t having it. We got tossed out! Boo!
