LA Cake Club & Hello Kitty Exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum

Hello friends, I’ve missed you! This weekend was a busy one. Liv’s school follows French curriculum so when they have holidays off, so does she. She’s on October break for a week. We went to  Cake 🎂 Club this past Saturday. I missed the last one since we were in Europe so I missed everyone. I made pumpkin squares with cream cheese frosting. I was concerned about the recipe since I ran out of granulated sugar and substituted brown sugar but Antz thinks it made it taste even better. He loved them and devoured about 5 squares!

Here’s the recipe I used
Sara’s Mom made this beautiful cake
My sweet friend Ellen made this amazing Dutch waffle cheesecake
Honestly I always kick myself for not taking better/more photos at Cake Club but I’m usually stuffing my gob or chatting so much to remember.
Thanks for another fantastic cake club, Sara!

Liv and her Cake Club BFF ran around like Superheros all hopped up on sugar

My friends and I decided it was a good idea to head over to the Hello Kitty exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum after lunch since we were so close.

We went to a kid-friendly Japanese diner in Little Tokyo
The food was excellent
The museum had timed entry so it wasn’t very crowded.

She’s adorable
I owned about half of this stuff in the eighties
I think it would be a rad idea to paint the walls in our garage like this one
I still think my bike is the best Hello Kitty beach cruiser ever!
I’ve been search ebay for this Mike Carroll for Sanrio skateboard for months, no luck
I hope to book a flight on EVA airlines one day
I loved Hello Kitty, My Melody and Little Twin Stars when I was growing up

Misha Lulu presents Life’s Adventures & Mysteries Art show at Leanna Lin’s Wonderland

This Saturday was the monthly Nela Art walk. It also was the opening of my sweet friend Karen’s art show Life’s Adventures & Mysteries. I loved every piece, Karen and Joe are so talented. There was also cute handcrafted headbands by Persimmon Jewelry adorable dolls made by Miko Design and floral wreaths by Cakies. One of my favorite shops for kid’s clothes, Kumquat was there with the new gorgeous Misha Lulu Fall line. It was so lovely to reunite with the Misha Lulu family. Olivia gets so excited to see Bela and play with the “big girls”! I saw most of the Misha Lulu Moms and I hope we are able to get together again soon for a shoot. We really wanted to walk to the art walk but the weather was unbearable so we opted to head home early to relish in the air conditioning.

There seemed to be a Misha Lulu attire dress code
Lovely Karen, always so chic * I want her dress!*
Bela is the cutest little spy ever!
Such remarkable pieces, we need more walls in our house!
How amazing are these dolls by Miko Design?!
I’m not at all embarrassed to admit I want one of these crowns for myself!

I bought the dress Olivia is wearing two years ago from Kumquat!
Liv is becoming such a good photographer
This lollipop dress is perfection. I love the bright, cheery colors and the cut is so good on Liv’s long frame. It’s one of my favorite dresses.
Liv picked her favorite. I adore the new Fall line!
This mustard dress is soooo pretty! It’s on my wishlist for Christmas
I may have to return and grab the Nan Lawson and Cuddly Rigor Mortis prints!

Everywhere you look in Leanna Lin’s is awesomeness. I would buy everything in there if I could. Bravo!!

Parker Palm Springs Part Two

I feel like I had too many photos in my last post so here are the rest of the photos I took of the Parker and the lovely grounds early one morning. I almost did the ice bucket challenge while we were there but no one has challenged me *Antz doesn’t count because he didn’t do it!*

A rare glimpse of Norma’s empty!
Love this color palette!
There are so many hidden spaces to chill by running water
The spa was closed so I didn’t get to check out the indoor pool

There was always a bunny hanging out here

After we said goodbye to our chic room, we headed towards the Saguaro to hunt for the most pinned house on Pinterest. I didn’t have an address other than knowing what the exterior looked like and it’s marked 1100 but no street name. After driving around for about ten minutes Antz had the genius idea to ask the mailman where the house was. We headed over in less than a minute *FYI, there are soo many gorgeous houses on that same street* You can see the interior of this architectural gem here.

This house was a few doors down, love the inner tube lions entry. These folks must party hard!

We had a terrific time in PS, the perfect staycation and lovely place to spend with my two loves.  See you again soon!

Parker Palm Springs

We haven’t made a big fuss about our wedding anniversary since our pop up dinner when we celebrated ten years. This year I wanted to do something fun but not overwhelming or too stressful. It’s hard to come up with new ideas within driving distance since we’ve done just about everything there is to do in LA. Then I remembered we had a ton of travel points we racked up on our credit card from our trip to Europe so I started looking for local hotels to spend a few nights. I came so close to choosing the Ace hotel *Downtown LA or Palm Springs* but I wanted to stay somewhere more posh so I chose the Parker Palm Springs. It’s exquisitely curated by one of my favorite designers ever Jonathan Adler. It’s perfectly styled in retro mid-century modern and I just may borrow one of his needlepoint pillows and a few ceramic vases might find their way into my suitcase! We stuffed ourselves at Norma’s for brunch and I finally tried eggs Benedict *I have no idea what took me so long*  We’ve been swimming, lounging, taking photos, drinking champagne, playing croquet and hunting wild bunnies. Our room is superb! It has a private patio with a hammock, plenty of air conditioning to make Antz happy and a luxurious king size bed. Seriously, I am considering taking all the furniture out of our bedroom and just having wall-to-wall king size bed. We’d have to crawl into the room because it’s the size of a broom closet but our queen bed feels like a twin compared to this spacious king.

Since I think I’m a high roller yet my wallet would beg to differ, I finagled my way into getting a tour of the fancy-pants suites. Most were occupied but we did get to hang in one of the villas *that costs like thousands a night!* I was super stoked to find a Serena & Lily hanging chair in the living room. I love how perfect they look in rooms but I doubt I would ever buy one due to my giant posterior and my fear of falling from things. It’s perfect for Liv though. I almost died when I saw a Moroccan wedding blanket in the bedroom. I want one so bad I am willing to fly across the world and traverse sweltering heat to buy one in Marrakesh. I have no idea how expensive they are but Urban Outfitters has this one of a kind blanket/rug for only $799 *hurry only a few left in stock they say* I know I have made some crazy decor purchases before but I can’t drop $800 bucks on a blanket no matter how rad it is. If anyone knows the scoop on affordable Moroccan wedding blankets, hook me up!!

So, today is actually our anniversary *8/18* but we have been pre-partying all weekend and tonight after a lovely/gluttonous meal, we are going to the movies with the kid. I am such a lucky girl. Let’s not dwell over the fact that my Nikon JI camera battery died I left the camera batteries at home, I also forgot to bring Liv’s backpack so we had to go to Target and buy her a few tops and a new bathing suit *she was due for a new one anyway* but there’s always a few hiccups in life.

Okay Parker, now you’re just showing off, nice faucet!
I wish I could photograph this fabulous wallpaper better *but my dumb camera died*
Our patio
For years we had a rope hammock in our backyard, this solid hammock is so much more comfy!
I thought I would burn to death outside on the patio but around 6pm, the weather is milder and that hammock is heaven
The view is not bad
Guess who’s ready to hit the pool in her new bathing suit?
Geesh kid, flexible much?
Liv is swimming completely unassisted, no floaties, no vest! She can hold her breathe underwater for a long time.

The grounds are a delightful maze

Nickelodeon Friends & Family Carnival

As if one carnival wasn’t enough, Saturday was round two of games, funnel cake, barber shop quartets, balloon hats, bouncy house, food, water gun fights and a crazy juggler. Nickelodeon really knows how to throw a party! Olivia was super excited to wear false eyelashes in rainbow, of course. I was calling her lil’ Phyllis Diller all day *as if anyone under my age would know who that is* I chose to don a mustache. This was the perfect summer party, totally has me inspired with ideas for Liv’s 5th birthday!

FABulous Dahling!!
Glamorous! Of course she wants to wear them everyday.

Liv won $1!!
Can’t wait until the Nick Halloween party!

Orange County Fair

Carny rides, corn dogs, smelly livestock, oversized stuffed animals that would never fit in our house, we’ve been carnivalin’ it up this weekend! Antz had Summer Friday *he gets every other Friday off, lucky I know* so we planned to drive to a mall in Anahiem and then take the OC Fair Express bus for $2 each which gives us admission coupons to the fair for $3 *regular price is $12!* We loved not having to pay $10 for parking and waiting in the long lines. Easy Breezy, living easy! We arrived at 1pm and it was fairly *see what I did there?* empty. We bought a $20 ride pass for Liv and all the rides were only $2! She had a ball on all the rides that looked like they would break any second. She was really curious about the scary haunted houses but she used her better judgement and went with the Mermaid themed funhouse. We all ate deep fried everything *except the fried lobster, you gotta draw the line* We really had fun!! The fair ends tomorrow so check out the OC Fair site for info.

I love the vibrant colors
So empty, I love going to places when there is no crowds

Nice legs kid!
I tried my best to get a photo for Aimee. You can almost see Pazazu above the guy!!!

Umm, this cotton candy thinks she is LSP! There is only one LSP
I can only handle one fried oreo at a time *What a whimp right?*
Seriously, the BEST corn dogs ever!
This kid is pretty hardcore
Almost tall enough to ride alone!
So I made the sacrifice and rode the roller coasters

Children of the 80s, remember sea monkeys?!
Meat MAN!
I actually worked at Hot Dog on a Stick when I was a teenager!
Ever heard of coulrophobia? Sparkles haunts my dreams
She ate her weight in cotton candy

Fun Friday!

Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise: The Lost Photos

How creepy is it that while we were in Paris half of the photos I took at Pere Lachaise cemetary went mysteriously missing? Well, yesterday I finally took the plunge and restored my iPhone so I could upgrade to IOS 7. I was reluctant to do it since I am technologically challenged and I could have lost everything on my phone. I waited patiently for 3 hours for the restore to complete. I was able to successfully update my iPhone and everything on my iPhone
was backed up. I even was able to finally download the new Party Party app. I made my first video to celebrate National Lipstick Day. Then I panicked when my iPhoto decided to all of a sudden crash on my macbook. I had to repair my library but for some strange reason when iPhoto restarted there was a folder that said “Recovered Photos” Hmm, I opened it and found a bunch of old photos I had previously deleted but there was about 200 of the 400 photos I lost in Paris. Sweet! So now I can show some of the photos we took when we were at Pere Lachaise cemetary and our visit to a cute craft store La Doguerie and a few of rue Montorgueil *sadly the rest are still missing*

We had so much fun in here until one of the cranky clerks told us we couldn’t take photos. I never understand why some shop’s have that dumb policy.
rue Montorgueil is on of the most popular pedestrian streets in Paris. It’s similar to the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica.

Nope, we did not try any escargot!
What a pleasant surprise to find these photos!

Our London photo shoot with Lee Robbins

I got the photos from our photo shoot with Lee!! They turned out better than I imagined. I love the shadow, the editorial style, the color contrast…I am so f-ing happy! We had a blast at the Ace Hotel, walking around the cool hipster Shoreditch neighborhood in east London.

Lee is magnificent! Book him if you are in London. Here just a few of my favorites.

See more posts about our time in London here, here and here

This is my absolute favorite photo Lee took. The way he captures shadow
and light is what made me fall in love with his photography.
I’m so happy we found this Banksy. So much of his art has been stolen, painted over or demolished

Thanks Lee XOXO!

Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Centre

Our experience at our first hotel in Amsterdam was meh. We checked out bright and early and hopped on the tram *along with all 8 pieces of our luggage* and headed to our next hotel. The Lloyd reminds me of The Overlook hotel in The Shining. It had creepy long corridors and used to be a prison long ago. The designers infused modern spaces that were bright and open, seamlessly blending the gorgeous 1920’s architecture. There were common areas like a library, offices and art spaces. We spent an hour just exploring the labyrinth of a hotel before dropping our luggage off and heading out to the city.

Photographing this hotel was like a photo shoot with a supermodel, every angle was perfection.
Hello gorgeous!

The Lloyd is enormous yet has only 117 rooms. You won’t find a corporate boring room like the one we stayed in on our first night. Most of the rooms are designed by Dutch artists and they range from one star amenities to five star. I love the idea of different styles of rooms at every price range. There’s even a room with a bed for eight! Here are some more unusual hotel rooms. Our room is considered the Honeymoon suite and I was so excited that we were able to book it. I loved every second in that room. I wish there wasn’t a TV in there because we never used it and it took away from the simple design of the room. Not to sound like some kind of snob but I’ve stayed a plenty of five star hotels yet this hotel was the most interesting and hauntingly beautiful place.

I know, I’m such a tease. I shall post our room soon.

Amsterdam

Hallo,
Groeten uit Amsterdam! Greetings from Amsterdam. The weather here is mild, we wore our jackets and dressed in layers because the sun tends to pop out of the clouds and make us hot. We arrived right in the middle of the pandemonium that is the World Cup so it was chaotic in Dam Square. This city is tiny compared to London and Paris. We were able to walk around the entire town in one day. Our plan was to eat, do some Father’s Day shopping and swing by the Anne Frank house to check out the line. We really enjoyed walking along the lovely canals. Folks on boats passed us cheering for Holland FC all decked out in oranje. We didn’t get hit by any bikes!

The tram was so fun, clean and easy to ride. I love public transportation in Europe!
The weather would be cloudy one second and sunny and hot the next
We skipped all the cheesy things like the Amsterdam Dungeon and Madam Tussaud’s Wax Museum
Let’s do some shopping!
New headphones for Papa
Liv ordered a pancake with ice cream, blueberries and rainbow sprinkles
Antz had a pancake with “chorizo” (it tastes like sweet pizza)
My pancake had bacon
Not bad
I wanted to see the floating flower market but I guess we missed it that morning
The cousin to Olivia’s Maps book!
Most buildings had these massive hooks outside. I suppose they use the pulley to carry large items upstairs
I love you too Amsterdam ❤

We checked out a cannabis store. No purchases were made!

The unique architecture of the city was fascinating

The line was an hour wait
We found this rad custom t-shirt place
Antz got a couple of shirts printed
We hung out with the owners pets while we waited
Happy Father’s day lovely!

We headed back to the Anne Frank house which had a shorter line since it was later in the day. It was a sobering experience.

Of course there is a strict no photos policy inside, but I couldn’t help myself. This was the bookcase that hid the Secret Annex.
My giant size could barely fit in the tiny space the families hid in for two years

We ended the day in the Red Light District which was disappointing. We saw red lights but no boobies!

We tried fries with mayonnaise (yum!)

We felt a warm welcome on our first day in Amsterdam. It was easy to navigate the city but of course traveling is a trial and error process. We quickly realized we made a costly mistake by taking a taxi from the train station to our hotel. Our cabbie drove the longest way possible and while I planned on being a 20 – 30 cab ride, ended up almost costing €60! We could have gotten off at the Schiphol train station and taken a tram for less than €10. You live and you learn.

Another lesson we learned during our travels is we must downsize our luggage. It was a nightmare traveling with eight pieces of luggage. I definitely needed only 3 or four pair of shoes and not 8! Although in my defense, I was glad I brought my Doc Martens and I did wear all eight shoes but I could use one pair of sneakers, one pair of sandals and one pair of boots. Since we had to pack for le Dîner en Blanc, we had to carry a fold-up table and a bag of dinner supplies. Liv had two bags which was perfect except she refused to carry her suitcase. Antz had the duffle bag and his backpack but he thought he overpacked and ended up carrying four bags. We did some shopping but I was disappointed that the Swedish Hasbeen clog store was closed.

Zie je later!
