Let’s get down to essentials

I’m talking wardrobe. I saw this post on Say Yes and it got me thinking about how to edit my own wardrobe.

12 wardrobe essentials for every budget
12 Wardrobe Essentials for Every Budget

When I look in my closet, I always feel like I have nothing to wear. I also have been feeling like I wear the exact same thing everyday. I definitely have a favorite outfit!

I have worn my DIY skirt to death!

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a go-to uniform or in my case “a signature look” *striped shirt/skirt/statement piece and flats or sneakers* I don’t follow many fashion rules but I don’t wear dark colors often and I always stay away from purple *I don’t want to be mistaken for a certain dinosaur* However, when it comes to clothing basics, I could use some updating. There are some key pieces I am missing in my wardrobe.

In January, I cleaned everything out of my closet and took an inventory of my wardrobe.

Before I cleaned my closet
Believe it or not, this is after I cleaned my closet

I definitely suffer from clothes hoarding.

That sweater on top belonged to my Mom. She has patches from all the places she’s traveled. I love it but I don’t wear it anymore because I’m afraid I might ruin it.

What you are looking at:

10 pairs of pants in every color of the rainbow *except gray, denim or black!*

10 shirts *I really want a light chambray shirt, an embroidered tunic and a swiss dot shirt*

10 tops/tees *Nothing special here, I could use some new boatneck tops and I want this shirt really bad!*

15 Sweaters *I’m good here yet my white cardigan has a hole in it and needs replacing*

14 dresses *I could use a shirtdress and a navy jumper*

3 shorts *I am considering cutting my old jeans into shorts, well see how they turn out*

I made the most progress getting rid of tons of shirts. They were old and I never wore them. It was hard but I used the 12 month rule, if you haven’t worn it in 12 months, it goes in the donate box. I got rid of anything that didn’t fit well and I sent some things to the cleaners for repairs. I should invest in a good garment bag for my fancy stuff.

I also went through my shoes and accessories. I must admit, I have too many shoes. I promised myself I wouldn’t buy any new shoes unless I got rid of a pair.

I sacrificed my old Green New Balances *they started hurting my feet* for my lovely floral Golas. I got them for next to nothing with my birthday discount at Anthropologie.

Unfortunately, as much trouble as I went through to get them, I am getting rid of my white oxfords I wore to Le DEB. They are super cute but I came home with the worst blisters on my heels from all that dancing. Funny thing is, they didn’t bother me at all during the night but when I took them off, I wanted to cut my feet off they hurt so bad. Lesson learned, always put band-aids on your heels when wearing a new pair of shoes. I am considering new white shoes for this year’s dinner.

So here’s my 12 Wardrobe Essentials

Trench coat, Saltwater sandals, dot chambray shirt, creme pullover sweater, mint jeans, polka dot oxfords, denim shorts, striped shirt, black t-shirt, statement necklace, green cardigan and gingham shirt

I have similar pieces to Liz Stanley but I don’t have a cable knit sweater, black ballet flats, I’ve yet to find a pair of booties that look good on my giant cankles and I am on the hunt for a pretty embroidered tunic. I would add a denim jacket, a pencil skirt, a shirt dress and my signature Ban.do piece for my basics.

I am starting to tone down my bright color choices and I’m leaning towards a more mature/classic style. I can always go nuts in accessories and jewelry. What’s going on in your closet? Have you mastered the essentials?

My DIY Midi skirt

I mentioned here all about my love affair with midi length skirts/dresses. You see, they are perfection for me, I am a giant. Someone of my stature can always use more length yet a maxi dress looks like I’m swimming in fabric *ie:a tent* Midi is in between your knees and your shins. Finally I won’t feel like I’m wearing a mini skirt all the time. So, I am doing my daily online window shopping and I stumble upon a midi skirt at ASOS.

Image 4 of Love Midi Skater Skirt

Everything fell into place, right fabric, right cut, right price *ASOS is always having a sale*, I put this guy right into my shopping cart. Then I looked in my closet and saw a sea of black skirts of various lengths *pencil skirt, maxi skirt, mini skirt…* We’re right around the corner from spring and I’m gonna buy another boring black skirt? I decided I needed something bright and cheery to add to my wardrobe. Ideally I’ve been wanting this lovely skirt for years but I haven’t found one in my price range *the one pictured was $200*

Stockholm Street Style

I love this yellow Gorman skirt *yeah, I love how blindingly yellow it is*

gorman yellow skirt
Guess who’s out of stock? Bleh.

So I decided to make lemonade out of lemons. Why not use my dust-collecting Hello Kitty sewing machine to make my own skirt? I could custom tailor it and save major buckaroos at the same time. I enlisted my amazing seamstress Mommy-in-law to help me out.

Plenty of yellow fabrics to choose from
Two yards for ten bucks? Yes, please!
This was my first time using a pattern
Awww yeah, POCKETS ARE MY JAM!! *but very fucking hard to sew!*
Testing out my pleats

It was tricky and took all day but I had tons of help, thanks Mommy! Also, thanks to Gorman Australia for the inspiration of the design and color we used. I am so giddy that a skirt I was going to pay $169 for, we made with our own hands for $20!! You obviously got a peek of it yesterday, but here she is again.

R A D N E S S

I know I hated on roses last week but these guys matched my skirt so well and peonies aren’t in season yet

By the way, did you notice my lavender sliver of hair?

There’s no way I was gonna bleach my chemically straightened hair, so here’s my trick.
I wanted a silvery lavender color *definitely not grape* so I used Matrix SoColor 3VR
I bought white hair extensions, sewed some hair clips on the extensions and colored it myself.

I’ll take more photos of my hair this three-day weekend!

The one that got away

Everyone has that experience in life where you see something *or someone* that you fall in love with instantly. It may be a handsome bearded young man listening to Holy Grail on his Beats headphones you saw riding the subway, or that vintage Chanel purse that was on sale but you couldn’t spend your rent money on it even though it was marked down by 50%! Or even, it could be that last piece of cheesecake you eyed at a restaurant but someone beat you to it. Well, mine was a coat rack. Wow! How boring did that sound? This coat rack is insanely unique. I saw it in Anthropologie years ago. You know how they have random pieces decorated amongst the store? Items like vases, art, vintage textiles, or even pieces of furniture that you didn’t know was for sale since they use them for displaying merchandise.

There it was, a rainbow wired coat rack, it was the phrase that made me fall in love.

It’s Beautiful Here

I inquired about the price, hoping it was within my paltry budget. Well, this is Anthropologie, the place where a tank top can set you back $118 clams. The salesperson took an eternity finding the price but when she said $500, my heart sank. Sigh, my dream of hanging this rack in my home that would one day be lovely enough to boast that “It’s indeed Beautiful here” began to fade.

I later came across the same coat rack on Oh Happy Day in her son’s closet bedroom! This gave me the info I needed, who made this piece of whimsical art? I discovered it’s a very handsome artist from South Africa named Heath Nash who uses recycled materials. This was back in 2011, so I knew I had very little chance of finding the coat rack. One night while perusing Pinterest, I saw the coat rack was pinned by a shop in New Zealand. The store was taking pre-orders but it wasn’t available for shipping yet and the price was NZ$429 which converted into $352 USD. I would also have to pay a heft shipping/customs fee. Oh well, it didn’t seem like it was meant for me. I still would daydream about how perfect it would look in our house.

Then a few weeks ago, I asked Antz *my husband is super talented and creative* if he could make the coat rack for me. He told me possibly could but where would we find the materials and he wasn’t so keen on the idea of copying someone else’s art. I agreed, so I randomly Googled the coat rack just out of curiosity and was surprised to find a shop had just received several in stock. I did a little research and found the shop was called Vamp and located in South Africa. They don’t have an online shop so I contacted them through Facebook. It took a few days for them to get in touch with me but she told me they had the Heath Nash coat rack for sale for 1,400 South African Rand. Whoa, that sounds expensive. I went to the XE currency converter totally expecting anywhere from $300 – $1000 USD. To my delight, the conversion was $131 USD. Yes! Totally in my budget and I would be buying from a shop that supports local artists. I had to wire the money internationally which was a little tricky but the ladies at my bank were super helpful. At first they were apprehensive when I said I wanted to send money to South Africa. I told them not to worry, I wasn’t sending it to a Prince who wanted my bank info to deposit millions into my account. They also told me many elderly people did fall for that scheme and they couldn’t do anything about it, so sad.

Well, I paid a little more *$85* for expedited shipping and insurance and held my breath waited for ten days. Monday morning my doorbell rang and I saw a postwoman holding an oddly shaped package, I knew it had arrived. She even asked me what was in the box coming all the way from South Africa while I signed for it. This guy is sparking such curiosity.

So, you wanna see my precious…?

I have a post about the skirt I’m wearing coming soon!

I feel like my persistence, patience and good luck was worth it for under $220. I finally got my lovely coat rack/art. I love it so much! Turns out I’m not the only one itching to get this guy, the lady I’ve been corresponding with said a woman in Singapore bought one and two others were sold that week too. What do you think? Is there an item you’ve been lusting after that seems to always be out of reach, or budget, or stock? I have my sights a few others on my Pinterest I’m hoping to one day add to my collection.

I am not a fan of soda *maybe Sprite* but this would be SO RAD in my future guest house/party palace. I have no idea where I would ever find this, let alone in working condition!
Objects – INHERITANCE
I found this guy at an Antique shop called Inheritance. It’s a Shako helmet on a wood hat mold and I adore it! That fringe tassel makes me so happy. I don’t heart the $500 price tag.

This lovely floral record player has been on my wishlist for a long time. It’s sold exclusively at Urban Outfitters and I almost bought it last Christmas. Then it sold out but now it’s back in stock on backorder. Here’s the thing. I feel conflicted with buying a record player because records are expensive *at least the ones I want* I am trying wait until I find a few decent LPs on sale or at garage sales and we have some space before I get this but it would make a lovely birthday gift.

Thanks Antz for the lovely photos. Happy Valentines day!

Valentine’s Day gift ideas that don’t suck!

Forget chocolates, don’t even think about a cheesy stuffed animal and roses are so cliché! If you are looking for awesome Love day ideas, I’m here for you!

I’m no chocolate hater, something sweet is always a good idea. Yet, I’ve had sixteen years of Valentines day with my husband, he knows better than to walk in the door with a heart shaped box from CVS.

I would be extremely stoked if he was thoughtful enough to buy me candy from my favorite company, P.O.P. Candy!

They come in a variety of incredible flavors, my fave, rosemary, pecan, almond, cherry, cinnamon, fire pistachio, they are all really yummy.

You can never go wrong with cute, girlie things from Ban.do! I am amassing quite the collection of lovely sequin hearts but I could always use one more!

I’m still a sucker for pretty flowers. In my early twenties *which tragically took place during the nineties* I was a huge fan of red roses and daisies. Oh my but my taste in flowers has changed in my thirties. I can say peonies, ranunculus, poppies and succulents make me swoon. The fragrance, the bright, happy colors, they are perfection. It’s still early for peony season so I would be majorly happy to receive any of these gorgeous weeds.

Honestly though, flowers only last for a few days, I think it would be a lovely experience to take a floral class. I am all thumbs when it comes to arranging flowers and I have no idea how to make my flowers live longer than a week. I would love to take a class at Floral LA or Moon Canyon floral workshop. I think it’s worth it for the price of a bouquet.

I would absolutely die if cupid left these on my doorstep! Seriously, I have been wanting this lovely couple forever. They are so rad I can’t stand it.

Abigails Head Vase

What’s more romantic than a picnic in the park? I adore this basket set from Anthropologie. All we would need is a cute blanket, some bread, a bottle of wine and my favorite Trader Joe’s chocolate cheese.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to something special from your sweetheart? I will be pleased as punch even if I get a homemade card from the Mister and the kid, every day I spend with them is my gift.

Do you love her Hello Kitty purse?

Renegade Craft Fair Holiday Market 2013

Okay, last weekend it was freezing cold, raining cats and dogs, yet today it was scorching hot. I was all bundled up and looking forward to wintery weather today. We took the train to downtown LA and bumped into our friend Connie on the way to the Renegade Craft Fair.

Guess what? It’s fucking HOT!!
Hi Connie!
This bus was so rad! I want to drive it across country like the Partridge Family. It looks like I used a retro filter but this bus has such a cool vibe, it turned out looking vintage on it’s own.
Can you spot the pyschopath onboard the Looksy bus? I was nerding out.

The highlight of going to the craft fair for the past three years has been buying rosemary almond candy from the P.O.P. Butter candy booth. Guess who wasn’t there this year? Bummers! At least we know to find them on Sundays at the Mar Vista farmers market if we really want some.

We did get our annual Magnolia photobooth picture.

The Grand Opening of Glendale Bloomingdales/VH1 Save the Music Foundation

As you may already know *from my Instagram* Antz pulled a “Hey, wanna go to an event 5 minutes before it starts? on me today. Well, of course I’m game! He got an invite for a black and white themed party at the new Bloomies in Glendale. Any party that hands out masks at the door is my kind of affair. It’s funny how much black and white attire we’ve acquired in the last year, so we were prepared on short notice. I had many wardrobe choices for Liv but we decided to give her Misha Lulu striped dress it’s last soiree before it’s retired to her clothes-I’m-hoarding-that-don’t-fit-anymore drawer. You would think the party was in Olivia’s honor the way she schmoozed the crowd and posed for photos.

The Bloomingdale’s director was captivated by Olivia. They had a nice chat about her Ban.do accessories.

 Happy Hanukkah to me??!!
So I met this pretty rad chick, her name is Samantha fucking Ronson!! We are totally buddies now, she’s gonna DJ Liv’s birthday party. She told me to use hashtag #wutangisforthechildren
 The store was lovely

Every single person told us she was adorable and she should be a
model…yeah, I feel the same way too folks. There were lot’s of
Bloomingdales executives and very wealthy peeps who were there to donate

So what was in that swag bag you say? A tote bag that I can have monogrammed on the 8th, $25 gift card, some gross colored nail polished appropriately named “load” and some old lady smelling eau de parfum. Thanks Bloomies!

Thanks for the fun evening my love!!

She’s changing her name!

Hello lovelies,

I am thinking about my blog name and I have decided to change the web address. I have tried unsuccessfully for the last 4 years to obtain the domain name of violentlyhappy.com. The dude who owns it doesn’t have a public email address and hasn’t updated his blog for many years. I tried to contact him via the website host but no dice.

I adore the name Violently Happy. It’s dear to me for many reasons. It’s one of my favorite Björk songs.

I think it’s the perfect cohesion of opposite nature. I like the balance of chaos and harmony that is inflected in the name. It sounds good and has power behind it. It describes me perfectly. Alas, reading blog books and even attending an online blogging workshop has taught me the first rule of blogging is establishing your brand. I’m by no means a “professional blogger” but as someone who made a whopping $150 in sponsored revenue and holding a nice steady amount of traffic from all over the world *well, according to Google analytics* I am ready to get rid of the long ass web address  I made it up seven years ago when I decided to try this whole blogging thing out *and only published two posts that year* Besides, http://www.lovesrobots.blogspot.com is pretty cumbersome to type or remember and I was dumb to even choose it then but so many of my choices were taken, so I settled. Also, I don’t even love robots, I’m sure they will all go berzerk, attack and destroy mankind.

Please, listen to the prophecy.

So all you lovelies who subscribe or have this web address saved, please note I am now officially…

www.sunkissis.blogspot.com

I have had the AOL username sunkissis since 1996 *I know I’m their most valued customer*. That’s like the year the internet began! I remember my Mom invited Antz and I over her house to check out her new Mac computer. We ended up picking our screennames that day. I choose sunkissis because sunkisses was taken and Antz went with blucartoonchickn because he’s a boy and he likes to draw and he’s a nerd. Anyway, we stayed on her computer until the sun came up downloading music and playing in the famous chatroom Guess Movie by Plot *any oldies remember that?* We were hooked to the interwebs and those names have been with us ever since.

In 1998 I got my first iMac

I thought I was hot shit when I got mine!

Sunkissis is my email, my Instagram username, my Pinterest and my twitter handle, may as well keep it all the same family. Lucky for me, it’s available. I just hope I can figure out a way to get this address change to the rest of the world *since clicking on my old blog address no longer works* I wish I knew more about learning computers.

What’s that address again?

Dear Guy Who Just Made My Burrito:

Have you ever been to earth?
On
earth, we use the word “burrito” to describe a tortilla filled with
things you eat. Pretty simple stuff, and I’m surprised you at least got
that part right. My burrito was, in fact, filled with food. In this, you
and I agree and are friends. But this is also where my lifelong hatred
begins for you and anyone else whose brain has been repeatedly scrubbed
with the same mixture of bleach and Pop Rocks as yours has. Because that
should have killed you, but left you around long enough to do what you
did to me today. Let me explain:
You’re an idiot.
Let me further explain:
Burritos
are eaten from one end to the other. So that means when you assemble a
burrito with motherfucking ZONES of ingredients going that direction,
you create a disgusting experience for the burrito’s end user. When you
make a burrito, you should put the ingredients in layers lengthwise. That
way, every bite has AT LEAST A FUCKING CHANCE of getting at least two
types of ingredients, and there is little chance of becoming almost
hopelessly trapped in a goddamned cilantro cavern.
Have
you ever eaten one of the things you make all fucking day? You should
try one. They are pretty good WHEN YOU ARE NOT WILLING YOURSELF THROUGH
THE FUCKING EMPIRE OF SOUR CREAM ONLY TO END UP IN LETTUCE COUNTRY.
When
you eat a burrito, you don’t stand it up and bite down on it lengthwise
like a fucking Rancor. Humans can’t usually dislocate their jaws, and
I’m not a fucking pelican. But you must think that’s how it’s done,
since that would be THE ONLY FUCKING WAY to take a bite of your
crapstrosity and have it taste like a burrito.
And guess what else, player? You probably can’t guess anything,
because I’m pretty sure you’re just a mop with a hat on it that fell
over and spilled some shit into a tortilla, but just in case, here’s
what:
Humans also don’t
eat burritos like fucking corn on the cob. Like a fucking typewriter
from one end to the other a little at a time and then DING next line.
But today I wish I had tried that. Because at least THEN I would be able
to eat some rice, then beans, then be all like HEY BEANS I’LL BE RIGHT
BACK JUST GOING OVER HERE TO THE GUACAMOLE FOR A SECOND.
Nope.
My
experience was more like HEY BEANS IT’S JUST GOING TO BE YOU AND I FOR A
MINUTE UNTIL I CAN FUCKING EXCAVATE THE RICE FROM BENEATH YOU BUT BY
THEN YOU WILL BE A FADING MEMORY OH HEY I WAS WRONG I’M IN THE FUCKING
CHEESEOSPHERE NOW RICE MUST BE NEXT I HOPE IT’S NOT ANOTHER FUCKING
SALSA POCKET.
You built this thing like a fucking pack of LifeSavers.
And
don’t even fucking think I’m about to open this shit up and re-engineer
your nonsense 90 degrees. I ALREADY PUT A HOLE IN IT WITH MY FUCKING
MOUTH. YEAH. THAT’S HOW I DISCOVERED YOU FUCKING SUCK AT LOOKING AT
THINGS. I AM NOT GOING TO DO FUCKING TORTILLA ORIGAMI TO GET THIS SHIT
BACK TOGETHER, ONLY TO END UP WITH A BURRITO THAT’S BEEN SHOT IN THE GUT
AND IS BLEEDING YOUR INEPTITUDE.
What’s
that? I should ask you to mix it up first next time? IS THIS JAMBA
JUICE? I DON’T WANT TO DRINK MY FUCKING BURRITO THROUGH A BENDY STRAW,
AND I DON’T WANT A PILE OF BURRITO SOUP IN A FLOUR CAN.
I just want a burrito.
In conclusion:
You’re
the worst thing that has ever happened to the universe, you owe
everyone everywhere an apology for this burritobomination, and I hope
your babies look like monkeys.

This has been a commercial.

Also,
it is meant to be a work of humor. If you take from this that a human
being really got as angry about a burrito as the post suggests, please
never introduce me to the human beings you know.
Also…

My Favorite Things: H & M Home

I first heard of the Swedish company H & M back in 2000 during a trip to New York with Antz. We were being typical tourists and found the store near Times Square. It was Christmas time and ridiculously cold *being from LA, we were not prepared for the seriousness of East coast winter* so we decided to pick up some sweaters. I bought a green long sleeve wool sweater and Antz bought a thick striped turtleneck *haha, here’s the turtleneck sweater*

Early 2000’s fashion, we are fresh to death!

The store was nice, it was a big deal when H & M came to Los Angeles in 2006 but I haven’t really shopped there since. Today I found a nice surprise browsing Pinterest to find that H & M has expanded their clothing line into home goods. Pretty awesome home goods too, these are on my wish list.
