My Favorite Things: Mothers Day Gift Edition

In the middle of the kitchen remodel, *our new floors are being installed as I write this!!* May is approaching faster than I’d like, mostly because I am swamped with things to prepare for my busiest month of the year, June *Liv’s birthday, my BFF’s son Holden’s high school graduation, Poppa’s day, Liv’s summer break & Antz birthday, whew!*

Luckily, May is a nice, long month and I will soon have a beautiful new kitchen to play with. Since Mother’s day is a nice day to receive gifts from my lovelies, why not nudge them in the right direction.

All mom wanted for Mother's day was to be shit balls drunk ecard - funny ecards

I couldn’t think of a more appropriate gift for our new kitchen! Sadly it’s sold out but I emailed the guy who makes them to see if he can make me one.

My favorite pair of pink slip on Vans are on their last leg.

My beloved Pink Vans in happy times

Since I can’t find the slip ons in pink in my size anywhere *keep your eye out for a size ten for me!* I could replace them with these. I prefer the convenience of non laces but these are still cute.

Vans Authentic Sneaker

 I also like these. Classic!

Puma Womens Glyde Lo Shoe

I’ve always been a big fan of Volkswagens *I have owned a Convertible Rabbit, two new Beetles, a Jetta and my current car is a Tiguan* I think everyone has fantasized about owning a rad VW Bus and road tripping along the coast. The colors are so cool and those curtains are adorable. I never understood why VW couldn’t modernize the interior features but keep the same body as the ones from the 60s? Well, since a bus isn’t logical for us, I would sure love this guy as a cute substitute! You can even create the inside too.

My laptop case doesn’t function as well as I need it too *hint, need room for my plug, iphone cord and other laptop related junk*

MARC BY MARC JACOBS Pretty Nylon – Computer Commuter Bag
This bag has a strap and goes so well with my new snazzy ipad case I got on super sale from Nordstrom. I’m sensing a pink theme here.

I have been wanting a record player for years now. I am glad I didn’t get one yet because this guy is so pretty and is exclusively at Urban Outfitters

Well, I need to have a few records to play on it, right? Here are some I hope to find at one of Highland Park’s local record stores.

Lana Del Rey Born to Die
Joanna Newsom The Milk-Eyed Mender

This pouch is super sweet. Plus it reminds me of my favorite MJ cover by Nite Jewel.

Mother’s Day isn’t complete without a homemade breakfast, a card and some jool-ree!!
This is lovely without breaking the bank but sadly sold out. My Eat Cake for Breakfast bag

Happy Kitchen Renovation Day!

Well not quite, but Sunday we went to Home Depot *after waiting 48 hours for a guy to come over to give us a quote but never showed up, why is it so hard to get a quote?* and did some pre-reno shopping.

Sheesh, could this kitchen look anymore dark and depressing?

I wanted to find out about renting tools *tile wet saw, floor sanders, etc*. We went to our local Home Depot only to find out we had to go to another one because they didn’t rent tools from there, D’oh! Turns out I like the second HD much better. It’s a bigger store, really well stocked, not crowded at all *due it the store being practically hidden* and the salespeople were actually helpful and knowledgeable! Hooray!

We got a price list of the tools for rent. It’s pricier than I expected, but it’s cheaper than having a professional do the work. I am really bummed that Home Depot no longer carries my Goddess Martha Stewart paint. The paint guy suggested we try Glidden as a substitute so we bought some samples to test out on the walls this weekend.

We chose Natural Wicker for the walls and Toasted Mashmallow for the trim.

We also found the subway tile for the backsplash for only a fraction of the estimated cost I budgeted. Sweet!

I budgeted $350 for the backsplash tile, now we only going to spend about $50 for everything!
The store’s display wasn’t impressive. I wanted larger tiles but since it’s a Do-it-ourselves-on-a-budget project, I’ll take it.

I shopped the knobs and drawer pulls section since Ikea doesn’t have what I’m looking for.

The price is perfect but Goddess Martha is bumming me out with the dated nipple knob. I am over the brushed nickel style so I’m still on the hunt. I practically bought every style of knob to bring home to test out on the cabinets. I almost like these antique glass ones but Antz is not a fan.

Nah, these knobs are too dainty for the doors

It’s understandably difficult to imagine the new knobs on such fugly cabinets. You like that paint job?? I can’t even begin to think of how much work it will take to sand away years of poor paint jobs on those upper cabinets. My biggest concern is the brand new lower cabinets will make the old uppers look horrible. Oh well, if need be maybe next year we can get the uppers replaced, after we get the foundation fixed and the house painted, and the….and the….headache!

On a happier note, I picked up some strawberries to plant since the bugs ate our old patch.

My assistant gardener
The wildflower seeds we planted last year have finally filled in nicely
She’s wearing her new adorable Misha Lulu skirt

Then we headed to the park

And so begins the new life of DIY kitchen renovators!!

Minty Fresh

Spring is just a week away, March 20th, also my birthday! I love the fresh flowers are blooming in our yard. This is the best time of year for our yard. We are getting new sprouts on our fig and cherry trees.

Our rainier cherry tree is starting to blossom, we hope to get a massive harvest this summer.
Blowing dandelions is her thing

I may even plant some herbs this year. We had lemon balm before and it grew nicely and smelled wonderful. Every year we plant something new, then they grow back at random times of the year. Like our snapdragon flowers are growing in our front yard but we planted them like 5 years ago. We used to have strawberries but the bugs ate them all. Any tips to keep strawberries bug free?

Our jasmine smells amazing. Go ahead, scratch and sniff!

I am in love with all this mint and navy combo I’ve been seeing in magazines and all over the land of Pinterest. Yesterday on my BFF date, I couldn’t resist this sweet pistachio bag from Target.

I normally need more room for the daily junk I carry but this guy fits my Marc Jacobs for Target pouch perfectly.

Now I’m thinking about pairing it with this ensemble. I love pullovers but I don’t have one in navy. I may take it to the ultimate nerd level and make a giant cursive L monogram *Laverne-style* for Liz. I have that striped shirt in white and it’s mega comfy, so I would like it in navy too. Spring is the best time for me to wear jeans cause when you’re Andre the giant tall, it’s nice for any fashionable reason to wear pants that are flooding *or as Gap lovingly refers to them as skimmers*

Luxlight crew pullover
Stripe-solid boatneck top
1969 always skinny skimmer jeans
Novelty ballet flats *love that these would go with everything*

Gap is having their annual Friends & Family Sale this weekend so you can save 30% off your online purchase. We have a busy weekend full of parties. Have any St. Patty’s day plans? I’ll be wearing my mint, that counts as green, right?

Parisian Apartments

As always, I am dreaming of Paris. We are planning our dates for our trip next year, the end of May and most of June. I have been working on our itinerary for awhile now and I’m trying to take advantage of every day we are in Europe. Since we are flying into London, we will spend a few days there, then take the train to Paris. We will be taking Liv to Disneyland Paris for her 4th birthday and squeezing in a day trip to Versailles and Amsterdam. I am having the hardest time finding the perfect Parisian apartment to rent. Well actually, I found my dream apartment but it’s not available for the time we’ll need it.

Paris 1 Bedroom apartment - apartment layout (PA-4192)
It has a weird layout

I fell in love with this lovely place but it’s only available for a monthly rental and we only need it for 2 weeks. We are going to Italy for a weekend and visiting my dear friend Aura in Finland for 3 days so the apartment would be empty for several days. Unfortunately, it’s over my budget.

Here is my alternative:

Notre Dame Left Bank La Grange Livingroom
Notre Dame Left Bank La Grange Diningroom
Notre Dame Left Bank : Balcony
Notre Dame floor plan
This is the quintessential Parisian apartment

I know you are thinking, that is a gorgeous apartment, what’s the problem? Well, this apartment costs the same to rent for one week what other apartments cost for 2 weeks. It’s also in a building with a Chinese restaurant located on the first floor. Go ahead and call me picky but I can’t imagine spending muggy June in an rental that smells like chow mein all day. Antz would probably enjoy the scent of food all day.
My dream apartment may still an option if we can get an invite to the Diner en Blanc. We would extend our stay for an extra week since the diner is usually held on the third Thursday in June.

I would love to attend during our trip, it looks so fun!

I may have found a loophole to get invited. By attending the Diner en Blanc in Los Angeles this year, we become members, which makes us eligible to attend a diner anywhere in the world. I registered for LA’s diner but I’m on the 3rd waiting list, so we’ll see in a few months if I get an invite *they only send them out 48 hours before the event*

I’m looking on airbnb but so far no luck. I have a long list of criteria for my Parisian apartment:

Higher floor with a view of the city
Elevator
Flooded with sunlight
7th Arrondissement
Not too noisy an area but plenty of shops in walking distance
Haussmanian building
Parquet or at least hardwood floors
Floor to ceiling french windows
Preferably a balcony or at least a window I can sit by and people watch
Modern kitchen with a dishwasher
Washer/dryer
Shower *you would be surprised how many apartments don’t have them*
Pretty furniture
Queen size bed
2000 or less euros a week

I know, I’m a nightmare, I will be searching forever.

Au Revoir!

Designlovefest/ohjoy Yard Sale & Etsy Pop up Shop at West Elm

Happy March! Happy new header courtesy of my amazing hubby, Anthony!

Today was a beautiful sunny day. Our spring flowers are blooming in the backyard and the honeybees are happily collecting pollen from the pink flowers on our plum tree *and causing me to sneeze out of my mind*. I picked up a few pieces from Target yesterday to brighten the kitchen.

What a wonderful day for Olivia to turn 33 months old!

Bri *designlovefest* and Joy *ohjoy* had a yard sale this morning. I was looking for rugs and possible chairs for the living room/dining room but we didn’t find what we wanted. I did score a B to add to our collection and I needed a huge bag of pink balloons.

I was thinking of this for Aimee but she might not have the room
I was almost sold on this rug, the perfect style and $40 price but it was teeny tiny for the space we need it to go.
Yeah! Rentals had some pieces in the yard sale
This vintage trunk was epic, but no room for it in my house
I really wanted to give this radio a home but we are filled to the brim with accessories, I have to stay focused on kitchen things. Yet, for $30 this guys still worked!

Liv scored an elephant that we are going to spray paint gold and turqouise
My loot and a few photos we took with my Fuji Instax camera
Bri, always smiling and fabulous
Stripes and dots and Joy!

After a quick lunch at home, we headed back out to the West Elm store to check out the etsy pop-up shop the lovely Emily Henderson was curating.

why am I obsessed with containers? Love these so much, they would look incredible on our wood countertops and our white subway backsplash

My Favorite Things: Birthday Edition

Please don’t give me a reason for making a wishlist, but my thirty–*cough* birthday is next month. I have been dropping hints in an obnoxiously unsubtle way to my sweet husband. I have my eye on a few many lovely things.

As they say…

What girl doesn’t love a new pair of pretty shoes?

Seychelles ‘Long Distance’ Sandal

I haven’t worn heels in quite some time but I am smitten with these beauties. The gold heel and bright green color are killing it. I walk so much better in a strappy sandal and Seychelles are super comfy. Yeah, I’ll be 7 feet tall but it’s my birfday, man!

My Bff Aimee has been raving about the wonders of gel nails. I usually skip a manicure since I have a toddler so my hands are often wiping things that are so not glamorous. Yet, my Bestie has gifted me a set of my very own gellies and a pedicure *so very needed* I will give them a spin. Now to go nude or gangsta bright? Bright you say…?

http://assets.mochithings.com/products/pink_dot_fuji_instax_mini_film/photos/13041/pink_dot_fuji_instax_mini_film.png

I have a cute Fuji Instax instant camera *remember we used it at our Bebe shower?* and I’m running low on film so these pink polka dots are perfect. I also love this shop, Mochi Things. I want everything in there.

anthropologie mint watch

I haven’t worn a watch in years but this minty watch from Anthropologie is so sweet…and like, I can’t have a Favorite Things post without an Anthro shout out.

So I have mentioned Geronimo Balloons many times but with Valentine’s day coming up *just 4 more days guys* I am lusting hard after those lovely balloons.

Over-the-Moon Balloon

As lovely as the heart shaped one is, a traditional round balloon would be so perfect for my birthday party at the Standard. My Instagram crush Christina got one for her birthday and look how adorable she is!

Did you lovelies check out the 5 hour telethon called the Grammys? I’m the only person in the world who liked Adele’s dress, she can do no wrong, she’s fucking Adele! So happy Fun won, their performance was incredibly rad. Pssst, Lena Durham is dating Jack Antonoff aren’t they the cutest?

Her granny sandals are the BEST!

Seriously, listening to this woman sing live is like the satisfaction from eating the best meal you have ever had while having a massage in your ears at the same time. Grrr! I am trying to remodel our kitchen, save like a maniac AND we gotta pay for Liv to get her learn on at preschool. Let’s not forget I’m hoping to go to Paris next year as well! Do not even try to interrupt my focus you temptress. I will not buy tickets…I will NOT BUY TICKETS!! *also keep in mind, I haven’t seen Björk live since 2008!! Oh shit…Belle & fucking Sebastian! Please somebody lock my wallet in a vault. Shit, who am I kidding? I have all my credit cards memorized. #Confessionsofamajorshopaholic

A Kitschy Kitchen

I can’t believe in a few months we will finally have water pressure in our kitchen. It seems silly to live with it for so long but every plumber has told us they would have to break open the walls to fix the issue, so we figured we may as well wait until we can put in a new tile back splash and new cabinets when the old tile gets demolished for the repairs. You know the saying…

Not that I’m into killing birds but I really want to kill the fugly tile backsplash we have now. So now comes my annual conundrum, to spend or not to spend? I first set the budget at $6000, for plumbing, a new DIY backsplash, painting the existing cabinets, adding some new knobs and drawer pulls and refinishing the wood floor, no frills. Then we decided Ikea installing new cabinets was our best option and all their silly extra costs began to add up, a new dishwasher, sink, faucet and BAM! Just like that the budget ballooned to $10000. Today I fell in love with the idea of having an island

Small island in the kitchen (Ikea Groland)
Do you see that trough sink? So pretty!!

Can you blame me? We are installing butcher block countertops, so there’s no way I wouldn’t ruin it with scratches or staining it when I spill cranberry juice on them the first day we install them. If we had an island, we could use it for our food prep and save the countertops from my clumsiness. It’s ridiculous how many kitchens I am seeing with the simple white cabinets, white subway tile back splash and wood countertops on Pinterest.

http://media-cache0.pinterest.com/upload/37295503134642186_Ql9onJ8n.jpg
I love the color of this countertop, you can tell this is a European kitchen. They always has the tiniest sinks.
IKEA Akurum Base Cabinets Sink Image 680 IKEA Kitchen Cabinets
These are the actual Ikea Akurum cabinets in a “real kitchen” I love that they made custom toe kicks that gives them a vintage feel. *by real I mean not fancied up for a magazine shoot.

http://www.askfurniture.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/beatutiful-kitchen-wood-countertops.jpg
I would love open shelves like these but we need the enclosed cabinets, our shit isn’t this nice. One day I’ll have nice shit!

This one is pretty close to our existing layout

Wood Countertops + Subway Tiles - minimalist | The Kitchn
I wish my cabinets were high enough to fit my Kitchenaid mixer under them. That would be the perfect place to store it in the corner.

This is the look I want, clean white, vintage inspired but modern functionality. Geez, why do I sound like a HGTV host?
I was never a fan of granite countertops, stainless steel appliances or dark wood cabinets. Feels dated and old folksy to me. I have no idea what color to paint the walls in our kitchen. We have so much crown molding trim that is painted white, it would seem too stark to paint white walls. I’m having similar feelings as Nicole from Making it Lovely about all white kitchen walls.

I definitely want to stain the floors darker
Not that the yellow walls are helping brighten my kitchen currently
See, my mixer is a tad too tall to fit underneath the cabinets

Now I’m like, where’s the color? Where’s the fun, bright cheery kitchen, you know? I suppose staying neutral is best since we are focused on selling our house. There’s so much to plan, decide and pay for *feeling overwhelmed* We had to return my lovely Hjuvik faucet since it doesn’t have a regular spout attachment and it’s too high for the wall. Bummer! In the end, as long as I have strong water pressure and a dishwasher, I’m happy!

PS: Wasn’t Aimee’s guest post rad?!! I love that lady so much!! XOXO!!

Want / Need / Wear / Read

Once again, I’m borrowing this feature *please be flattered* from Bleubird but it’s so cute. It’s pretty self-explanatory please, feel free to borrow from me…

Of course I would choose the only book no longer in print and impossible to find. Yet, I’m so fascinated by Sofia Coppola.

Sofia-Coppola-by-Peter-Lindbergh-for-LUomo-Vogue-September-2010

She appears to be a quiet ingenue *rare for a Hollywood socialite* but shows her voice is quite loud and has a great eye for stunning visual and vulnerable characters in her films. Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides & Marie Antoinette are my favorites. I will keep an eye out for it next time I visit Wackos.

So tell me lovelies, what are your Want/Need/Wear/Read?

Kitchen-plosion!

I have a one-track mind lately, well, actually multi-track mind. Liv being sick for the last 3 days is super lame. I’m just getting over my cold, we are both sad faces.

Matching chins, only her double chin is cute and mine is horrible!

This amazing song is constantly playing in my head from putting together Liv’s birthday party playlist.

Last night Antz and I had our first Wii workout last night *I’ve gained 2 lbs since Halloween* I did 36 minutes of boxing, step, hula hoops and kung fu *my favorite* I’m not the least bit sore today! So when I’m not preoccupied with those things, my mind is daydreaming of our new kitchen. It’s hard to stick to our tight budget, especially when our 10 year old toaster dies and I have been wanting this handsome guy for ages.

Knowing my luck when I’m ready to buy accessories, they will be sold out *they are sold online only* I am so excited to actually have counter space for lovely things. I am constantly looking at white subway tile kitchens on Pinterest. I’m a little cautious of buying any cute stuff now since I still haven’t gotten a final plumbing quote and I’m expecting a ton of unexpected costs when Ikea installs our cabinets. We didn’t budget for professional demolition. We’re going to attempt to do it ourselves and see if we don’t ruin our house before we have to hire professionals. I have to WILL stay on budget!
