The Wonderful World of Breastfeeding

Well, I kinda promised this post for Friday but I couldn’t get it done in time but such is life and here it is, better late than never, right? So I have some lovely friends and family who will be welcoming a little bebe this year so I wanted to give them my perspective of breastfeeding. *disclaimer: there will be no actual boobs featured in this post* Olivia and I have made it to the 21 month mark. Whoo-hoo!

Liv, seconds old and we’re already best friends

“I’d like to to accept this platinum booby award and thank my darling daughter for helping me make this experience pleasant and rewarding.”

Let me not sugar coat it, breastfeeding is difficult, at first. In the beginning it’s on par with a dentist visit and a pap smear all in one. Uncomfortable but necessary. The best way to start is to research before bebe comes along. You should weigh the pros and cons of how you choose to feed your child. If you know you will be returning to work soon after delivery, you need to find out if you can pump at work. You definitely should attend a breastfeeding class *most often offered by your hospital*
you can also check out :

The Pump Station in Hollywood or Santa Monica
There’s also La Leche League which I hear is a delightful source

Try not to be squeamish when you think about the latch process, it’s not as bad is you think. The most important thing to know is BE COMFORTABLE!! My postpartum nurse was so amazing because she showed me how to bf laying down since I was tired. I was mostly grossed out by that feeling like a cow scenario I had in my head. All in all, the second Olivia was born my doctor put her directly on my chest and we tried to get her to breastfeed immediately. There’s nothing like that first second bond. You become oblivious to the pain and you think I will die for this child, dramatic but true. She totally melted my heart *like Twilight imprinting* She didn’t latch right away but I tried a few minutes later and she did. Bring your bebe to you, not your boob to the bebe *this is where a Boppy comes to the rescue*. The first few days of bfing the baby isn’t getting much milk cause you have this clear fluid called colostrum. Another tip my nurse gave me is don’t worry that you might suffocate your bebe with your boobs. I was so worried she couldn’t breathe but if your bebe can’t breathe, she will turn her head, itsĀ  an instinct. It will panic you cause you will feel like you are starving your child but by day 3 you will wake up and notice Pamela Anderson has taken over your torso. The word is engorgement. It hurts, you leak but it’s the best time to try out your breast pump. Take a hot shower to help open your ducts. I pumped a measly 2 ounces the first time because I was afraid to pump. By that night, I was a pro, all you think is I must get this gallon of milk out of me! It was wonderful to have a few bottles ready for Antz to give Liv so I could get some rest during the night and early morning. I bought a Medula Harmony manual pump. It’s super easy to use and affordable.

Bfing Liv at home for the first time
Antz was an expert at bottle feeding
Most common occurrence from breastfeeding…it’s called The ITIS

Olivia latched like a pro. She made it very easy for me to fall in love with bfing. This is the most tricky part of breastfeeding, getting your bebe to latch but it will happen if you keep at it. I have breastfed Olivia everyday since she was born and it has been fantastic. I can’t give you any formula advice because I have never bought any. My kid has not been sick *other than a couple of runny noses* and she has only spit up once. I must have overfed her cause it was the only time she ever threw up.

Barf face

One thing I forgot to mention. I’m sure your ob/gyn has already told you to take prenatal vitamins. I found a great brand that is smaller than other pills and doesn’t upset your stomach.

Nature's Bounty Pre-Natal Multivitamin Tabs, 100 ct (Quantity of 3)

Nature’s Bounty *I buy mine in a 3 pack from Amazon* which of course I am still taking since I’m still breastfeeding.

Liv began to eat solids when our pediatrician *find a one you really love because this is going to be the person you trust your child’s health care to for the next 18 years, go with your gut* gave us the go-ahead at 6 months and she started drinking organic whole milk at 7 months. In the last 3 months Liv mostly bfs at night *it’s kind of my secret for getting her to sleep through the night* but she does occasionally wake in the middle of the night to nurse. My “loose” plan is to continue until she turns 2 or she chooses to stop.

This blog has been incredibly helpful to me and I love her bebewearing advocacy.

Marvelous Kiddo

Buy a good babywrap! Your bebe wants to feel wrapped tight, warm and snugly next you as much as possible *it reminds them of being cozy in the womb* It also gives you a hands free break so you can move around comfortable and freely. So Mommies & Daddies wear your baby as often as you can because before you know it, they will be off and running away from you!!

I adore nursing. It has been incredible *I’ll be sad when she stops* but I highly recommend it to any new Mommies *even if just the first few months* there are so many benefits to Mom and bebe. I am by no means an expert, I’m only sharing my own experience and insight.

Please ask me anything below. Best of luck!!

Lizzie’s Guide to Rad New Bebe Essentials

So it seems that this is a long overdue post. I am super excited to be welcoming new bebe friends for Liv this year so this post is inspired by my Parents-to-be**. We had brunch with our nephew and niece, Cayce & Ann-Marissa, who are not only expecting their lovely bebe girl in June but also just closed escrow on a new MEGA MANSION dream house. Congrats guys, I couldn’t be happier for you both!

Joining the awesome bebe girl power squad!!

**I can now Congratulate Carlos & Stephanie on their littleĀ  Peanut *they made their announcement today* it has been super hard keeping my trap shut for the past week! Congrats to you guys, you’re gonna be amazing parents. XOXO

Olivia’s wig is huge!!

You can find a few posts here, and here, about the key items we found critical to life with a new bebe. So, as an old pro to the bebe game, here are my essentials:

The good ole’ 3 piece furniture basics…crib, dresser w/changing table and a comfy glider.

Classic Collection
Changing Station
You may not use the crib for the first few months but it’s nice to have one ready to go when the time comes that you want a good night’s sleep *alone* this may happen much later than you think.Ā

Our crib and dresser/hutch, and changing table are from the Oeuf Classic set. We also got the toddler bed conversion set *so happy we did*. Now I know you are thinking I’m cray cray when you see the price but Antz used his bargain spidey skills and found the entire set on Craigslist for much less than retail price. We were extremely lucky to get ours brand new but even a gently used crib would work *after some serious sanitizing*. I see this set in almost every nursery blog or design magazine because of it’s modern and clean look. It’s unisex and eco-friendly *if you’re into lovin’ Mama Earth* The glider’s function should be comfort. If your brave enough to breastfeed, you will be using this chair 70% of the time. We choose our Luca Glider based on 2 features, it was perfect for supporting my giant frame and it was soo much prettier than the frumpy one I saw at Pottery Barn kids. Look for lower back *lumbar* support and a chair you can get in and out of easily, while holding a slippery bebe.

Luca Glider

The next must-have is a Boppy. If they ever need a spokeperson, I’m your girl. I still use my Boppy today *20 months later* They come with a washable slipcover which is fantastic cause I spill on it more than Liv does. The Boppy also doubles as a cushion to prop up bebe when she is learning to sit on her own. It has the perfect Liv to my boob fit. Comfort is crucial while breastfeeding!!

Slipcover
Boppy in Aqua

You may or may not want a bassinet or Moses basket for bebe to sleep in for those first months. Some folks let bebe sleep in the bed with them but I was much too neurotic to do that. We got our bassinet from the same place as our glider, again, their style is pretty and modern. Target, Babies R Us or any kids store is perfectly fine for a bassinet, preferably one that rocks.

Ninna Nanna Bassinet

The one item all Mommies have for their bebe’s across the world is a lovely, little giraffe teether named Sophie. She rocks in every way possible. Register for 2 on your baby shower registry, cause you will go nuts the day you lose or drop your Sophie.

Sophie The GiraffeĀ
Sophie the Giraffe

So you’re gonna give breastfeeding a go…YAY!! Well, if you are like me, you are probably a bit apprehensive about pumping. It really isn’t that bad once you get the hang of it. I used a manual pump so I can control the pump speed and pressure *and I’m a wuss*. Medela is my favorite brand.

Harmony Manual Breastpump

There will come a time when your pediatrician says it’s time to start solids *you’ll be sad on the inside cause it’s the starting point of your little bebe growing up* but it’s fun to cook up creative recipes for your little one. The Baby Bullet gets rave reviews but I like the Beaba Babycook since it steams and purees in one cup. We found ours used on Craigslist for $80. Just last week we steamed some corn and carrots for Liv’s dinner.

A stroller is an investment when it comes bebe gear. Some parents buy the infant car seat stroller *a fancy stroller frame where the car seat attaches* but they only are good for about 6 or 7 months. Some folks choose a pram or they must have a jogger stroller *that’s a three legged doohickey and I kinda love that one* I am 100% happy with our choice, the Bugaboo Bee. I spent months researching which stroller to buy and I found the Bee ticked all the boxes. I was waivering between a Bee and a Chameleon but the high price of the Chameleon was a dealbreaker. Most of the reviews were positive but there were complaints about the Bee’s wheels and brakes. I guess they listened to the reviews because just before we bought our stroller, Bugaboo put out a new and improved version of the Bee. Larger wheels and sturdier brakes were included with the 2010 model. I received the Bugaboo cocoon as a gift for Liv to use while she was a newborn. Aside from having a hilarious folding issue with it the first week, we have been quite happy happy with it ever since. You should think of the terrain you plan to use your stroller, the ease of opening and closing it as well as the features it comes with. Our Bugaboo Bee doesn’t have the storage and cup holders other strollers may have, but it has worked wonderfully for us.

Now she faces forward *cause she’s an adult*

Baby carriers come in all shapes and sizes but my go to brand has been the BabyHawk. It’s lightweight, multi-functional and secure *a total lifesaver*. I had to convince Antz it was safe after he watched the videos on their site but after the first time he tried it, he was hooked. I rarely had the chance to use it whenever we were together. I have breastfed using it at Disneyland. I may even get her a BabyHawk Oh Snap cause holding her has become a work out neither of us is prepared for.

The next item is a necessity if you are nursing. A hooter hider is essential for a spur of the moment feeding in public. It’s weird at first, but soon you will feel confident enough to whip those boobs out in any situation *like a mall parking lot*

Diapers are the smelliest part of having a sweet bebe but having a good storage unit for them helps. I have a Diaper Dekor. I find it easy to use, it holds about a few weeks of dirty diaps and aesthetically pleasing. Throw a couple of stick up deodorizers for good measure.

Diaper Dekor Plus
Diaper Dekor Plus

I find the perfect diaper bag is a critical part to your bebe gear. You need something that can be used as a messenger bag or backpack because you want to be hands-free as often as possible. Having a sturdy bag with enough room for all the baby essentials as well as your wallet, keys and *sanity* Antz and I have our separate bags so we always have one ready to go fully stocked. I adore my Petunia Picklebottom Bag but I wish it was waterproof inside *I have spilled so many various liquids* I recommend a dark color cause it gets pretty grimey.

Diaper Dude

You’re probably wondering what in the heck will I need in my diaper bag? Well here’s a list of my inventory *remember, I tend to overpack*

5-7 Diapers
a box full of wipes
a tube of A & D ointment**
a change of clothes
extra socks
a sweater
a sunhat
a warm beanie
suncreen
a few books
a burp cloth
my hooter hider
various toys
her Yo Gabba Gabba dvd *never leave her with a babysitter without it*

**A & D ointment is the best invention and life saver you will ever use. The first thing our post partum nurse *awesome Alma* told us was every time we change Liv’s diaper, put a dab of A & D ointment in her diaper and rub it together. We have used this method all this time and she has NEVER had a diaper rash. I urge every parent to try this. It totally works!!

Blankets, onesies, bibs, rattles…I have no particular preference. You will most likely receive an abundance of these at your baby shower *and you can never have enough*. One blanket that does help if you happen to have a summer bebe like us is the Aden + Anais swaddle blankets. They are super light fabric so your bebe won’t become a sweaty Betty and they are pretty easy to swaddle *it takes practice* it comes with a how-to instructional dvd.

This groom kit is spectacular. I use the nail clippers and comb the most but these are all the essentials you will need.

So that’s all the must-have bebe items and resources I can think of. I’m sure I will add to the list as I think of things but this is a good start. I will post a guide for toddler-hood soon. Try to resist the urge to punch someone in the face when they give your bebe their thousandth stuffed animal *sheesh, when will people learn to buy you things you need instead of things that just take up space* Congrats to any future parents, Liv is now taking appointments for playdates. Being a parent is life-changing in a way I can’t describe. You will quickly forget what life was like pre-bebe but in a rad way. I am happy to answer any questions or add any tips. Bonne Chance!

Ā Ā  #6.Being aĀ Parent/Godparent
Ā Ā Ā  Ok…I was a very young mother.I had my son when I was 20.It was both the hardest and best thing that I have ever done in my whole life.I traded my 20’s for parenthood, and do not regret a minute of it!My son is the best person I know and has the best heart&kindest soul(I know, every parent says that about their kid)!We had the best time together when he was little(he now lives with his dad),and thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company. He is a teenager now,so,we don’t see eye-to-eye as much anymore. But,he is a really wonderful kid.Being a Godparent is THEĀ greatest gift my bff has bestowed upon me.She asked me to be Liv’s Godparent during a really hard time in my life. This made my WHOLE world change forever!I am now partially responsible for this lovely little jewel-FOREVER!Liv is the funniest toddler I have ever met!I always tell Lizzy,”Liv is one of us!”She is beautiful and wonderful and smart.I so happy to be part of her family and life forever.I take being a Godparent EXTREMELY seriously.

#8.Nancy Grace-
This lady RULES!I am ALWAYS tuned into HLN(I know,I am a dork)!I know that I do not in any way fit the usual profile for her viewers-i.e.,I don’t live in the Bible Belt and I am not a Republican. However,I love Nancy because she is so smart and tells people off like a mofo.I love her southern accent and she fights for missing women and children and all of the fallen soldiersĀ that have died inĀ thatĀ endless and meaningless war.

She is the BEST EVER!!
Oh shit, she’s about to go off!

*Lizzie note: For reals, she watched every second of the Tot Mom trial*

#9.Venice, Ca-
I live in V-town(A.K.A.Dogtown)…It is a mix of artists, homeless, professionals, skateboarders, surfers, quasi/hippies, and yuppies raising families.I really love living there.I am a transplant(an ex lived in Venice and I just made my life there), even though I used to ditch school in 8th grade and hang all day!I live in the RADDEST place ever. My building is 100 years old and Jim Morrison, Mae West lived there and was owned Laurel & Hardy. I even have an original clawfoot tub and a trundle bed.

It is a Muthafucking FREAKSHOW!!!
*love!*
Of all the places I’ve lived this one is my absolute fave!

#10.Women with short hair-
I have had either almost shoulder length hair,to a very short and cropped pixie cut my whole adult life.I love the freedom of having short hair. It’s super easy and I need to be really creative to stay super feminine, which is really fun!One of my favorite blogs is: FUCK YEAH-GIRLS WITH SHORT HAIR!I love it,because all the women are really edgy and hot and the photos are GORGE!Right now,my muses are Emma Watson and Jean Seaberg!I love them!

*Lizzie note: Thanks babe, and yes, you will!!*

Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards Show

My ears are still ringing from the tweens sitting behind us screaming their lungs off. We had a fab time at the show but I’m still a little disappointed we couldn’t get tix to the pre-party that was held on Friday and I couldn’t finagle our way down to the “orange” carpet to be Mommerazzi! Not one celeb sighting! Liv had a blast! I wanted to buy some kiddie headphones to protect her ears but we didn’t have time to stop at Best Buy and she seems perfectly fine. We took our nephew Justin *who is 10 and is too cool to be impressed with anything* I had to refer to him to find out the names and what show these NickelodeonĀ kids were from. I only know one show on Nick Jr. and we all know that’s YO GABBA GABBA! *who unfortunately weren’t there* We did see *from our seats* The Black Eyed Peas, Russell Brand, Jack Black *who hosted*, Miley Cyrus, Nicky & Paris Hilton, Jason Segel, Jane Lynch, Kim & Kourtney Kardashian,Ā Justin Timberlake, Rosario Dawson, Johnny Depp, Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Heidi Klum,Ā & Jim Carrey. There was some mega sliming going down.

My sorry attempt at being aĀ cool and hip Mummy

The face: Smashbox photo finish primer, Nars foundation in Tahoe, Nars under eye concealor in Ginger, Mac eyeshadow in Rule *Matte orange* MAC eyeshadow in Jewel Blue, MAC kohl eyeliner in black, Nars blush in Taj Mahal, Mac Prep & prime mascara, Maybelline Great Lashes mascara in black, Nar lipgloss in Triple X *but it’s really just clear* and MAC studio fix settingĀ spray *to set my clown face!!*

I love Antz trying to master my Yay-face, stop copying me!!

OMG! We were mobbed by folks complimenting Liv *and her awesome Fedora* she was the only bebe at the event. I wanted to be like, unless you want to star her in your next teevee show or film, BEAT IT!! *Momager level increasing*

Boo, I kept cutting Liv out of the pic…oh well

Yep, I breastfed at the KCAs!

This is Liv’s full face

Take a wild guess when my crummy Canon Powershot batteries died. To be fair, I took a ton of video footage with it while we were driving and it was only 60% full when we got there.
iPhone camera, boo!

This fellow is John Christopher Depp II, he won for best Actor and slimed the audience. Sort of glad we weren’t in the front, they looked disgusting!

We interrupt this post to bring you an ongoing camera vent. The tix for the awards clearly stated No cameras! with my experience at award shows, you go through a metal detector and they scan your bagĀ and search youĀ as if you are hiding a bomb in your ponytail. Well as much as I wanted to hide my enormous Nikon camera in Liv’s diaper bag, I knew we would have to settle for the Canon Powershot. This camera seems to hate me. It works brilliantly when I’m taking a photo of a tree or someone very unimportant but when I go for the money shot, it always fails me! Take for example, look at my photo of Johnny D above and this one below. Now I stole this photoĀ from dlistedĀ note the crisp, sharpness which are not a possibility with my lousy camera. I was zoomed in as close as I could get and Johnny is now blurry. I know I have no professional training with photography but when you advertise a camera as a point-and-shoot shouldn’t that be the expectation of the user? GRRR!!

Some band called the Black Eyed Peas….ever heard of them? Honestly about 7 years ago I saw the BEPs live at a club in LA *Pre-Fergie* and I used to love them, then they decided they wanted to become zillionaires so they hired the ex-Methface and now their music makes me want to stick nails in my ears. I couldn’t even begin to post any of my videos here *it took me an entire day to upload these pics due to a lame power outage on Sunday* so if you would like to see them, check out my youtube page.

Willow Smith performing *I didn’t even barf* but the girls behind us were going ape shit!

Jane Lynch *I love her!* and Jason Segel

Snoop Dogg getting slimed

Jim Carrey *in the hot air balloon* and Jack Black getting majorly slimed

Nothing makes me happier than a deranged look on my face…perfect crazy eyes!

I will post this one video because we asked a security guard to take our picture and it literally took him 15 minutes to try to figure out how to take the pic. After fumbling with my iPhone this is the shot he got! I thought I was going to go numb posing for so long, sorry Mr. Security guard, you are not so bright!
Our submission for awkward family photos
After the show we hightailed it over toĀ a classy joint, Johnny Rockets…errr mistake! We usually love that place *killer chili dogs and onion rings* but the one in Alhambra has been disappointing. We still took some rad photos.

This is Liv’s new thing, she’s all about funny faces!

This photo is CREEPY…She’s all demonic!!

This is what happens when you make me wait 20 minutes for onion rings and a plain ole’ grilled cheese sandwich

The mighty ale of ye ole root beer floats!!

Good Times, it will be much more funner *I know that’s not a word* whenĀ Olivia is hosting, presenting, performing and WINNING!!!

Hollah! weenie

Exhausted!! I just got home, it’s been a long but super fun day. I started on my costume around 11am. I am Mrs. Procrastinator when it comes to getting ready. I somehow get wrapped up in doing my hair and makeup and it ends up taking HOURS!! I feel like putting on make up is my primal ritual, similiar to Joan Crawford’s regime in Mommy Dearest, it feels cathartic for me. I would go without food so I could buy a new shadow. I have trouble walking past a Sephora without peeking in. I really get stopped on the street by folks inquiring about my makeup. Well, today I used a TON of makeup so I decided to document what went into my 60’s look.

Fresh faced, I use Eucalyptus & Tree Tea oil facial wash from The Body Shop

My foundation is heavier than I would wear regularly. I knew I would need long term coverage so I broke out the what Antz likes to refer to as “Clown face” My everyday base: Smashbox Tint w/SPF 45, MAC Prep + Prime *for my eyelids, this is what keeps my eyeshadow bright* and I use my MAC concealer brush to apply the base *I try not to use my fingers to apply makeup because it smudges and adds oil to my face.*

After applying Smashbox Photo Finish primer *the best for photos, diminishes oily T-zone* I used Nars  foundation in Tahoe, mixed with Smashbox in Medium M2, I also used MAC Studio Sculpt concealer to cover my dark undereye bags and MAC Select Cover-Up as my highlighter *on my jaw bone and bow bone*

I hardly use liquid liner because I pretty much use my MAC Kohl eyeliner in Smolder everyday but since I wanted a Bridgette Bardot eye, I lined my upper lid with Urban Decay liquid liner in Revolver. Lower lids I used Nars eyeliner in Black Moon *for my wings*

I only wear falsies for special occasions so they are perfect for a 60’s look *love that period in fashion* I like fake lashes by Japonesque these have a crisscross pattern and a hint of shimmer *I have a pair by Makeup Forever with feathers on them, they are mega fierce*

An hour in…I even used lip liner *which I never do because my lips are crooked* Nars lip liner in Jungle Red

So what kind of weirdo uses 3 mascaras?…this guy! I start with MAC Prep + Prime to plump up my puny lashes, then I apply my falsies *which always makes me cry so I have to reapply several coast of foundation and eyeliner* next I use Maybelline XXX *they are the BEST for mascara* and finish with a coat of Great Lash *and pray I don’t look like Tammy Faye Baker*

Shadow is my favorite part. I usually love to go nuts with wacky colors but since I was going for a conservative look, I chose warm browns: Nars Duo in Balthazar, Nars shadow in Goldfinger to highlight and MAC in Amber Lights and Coppering. I typically use Nars brushes for a majority of my makeup but for my eyes I am partial to my Chanel brushes. They cost an arm and a leg but they are totally worth the investment *I will hand them down to Liv* The secret to blending and making a dramatic eye is well-kept brushes, I wash my brushes with baby shampoo and let them air dry overnight. The better quality your brush, the less product you end up using. This is as close as I will ever get to wearing Chanel. šŸ™

Next is blush: Nars in Amour and I wait till I have finshed my hair before I put on my lipstick *blow drying my hair is not fun when I have lipstick on*

Hair products are my crack, I am a sucker for great hair products, I use Bumble & Bumble Smoothing Creme prior to blow drying, then after I flat iron it to death I use a serum to control my frizz. Because I had my Snookie pomp going on I used Sebastian holding hair spray which holds without feeling like glue.
So I finish with MAC Fix+ Mist *it’s supposed to set your face so your makeup won’t run/streak but I think I got tricked into buying a $19 bottle of water*

Here’s my final face *along with my lovely fairy*

We made it to Antz job just in time for the costume contest

My vote goes for Monkey Business Antz *why did he think his banana was a cell phone?*

I grabbed him for a pic, his hat spun around and lit up, it was SUPER RAD!!!

I love the Team Zissou crew *one of my favorite movies*

This guy was awesome, I think he was Grady from The Shining *my #1* but it wasn’t clear because he was a bellhop and Grady was the caretaker…either way he had an awesome suitcase with stickers from the Shining so he was alright in my book.

Antz and some random guy

Leela from Futurama

Story came with us but left early because she had to walk her doggie.

There was tons of activities *face painting, pumpkin and cookie decorating, slime making, that’s Nick for ya*
Inside the whole office was converted into a series of mazes. The first ones were pretty lame but they had a Alice in Wonderland one that was really cool.

There was an actual rabbit hole that you have to crawl through

That’s Antz monkey mask in the pics, he didn’t even know it was in the way

There was close to 12 mazes total and at the end of each one they gave out candy

Our Loot! We weren’t greedy *this time*

A bunch of folks came up to us to tell us how adorable Olivia is, one lady even took pictures of her. She had a ball! We were so happy to have her with us this year *for the past 10 years we’ve been saying how cool it would be to bring a baby to an event like this* Sadly there was no Yo Gabba Gabba! characters but we had a blast anyway. I can’t believe we have 2 parties tomorrow and we are taking Antz sister to the animal shelter to help her pick out a new kitty. Then Sunday we are going to the Venice canals to trick or treat, Whew, I am super tired. Mix tape Friday will have to take a rain check for next week.

Yawn,
Nighty Night!!
