For you Mid-Century / Cinema nerds

This video by James Munn is delightful and the score is so very Kubrick-esque.

The Anniversary Party Eleven Years Married

As I am 11 days away from our 11th wedding anniversary, I am reflecting on how amazing, fun, blissful, difficult and fulfilling these married years have been.

This was taken on our beach in Malibu a few months before we got married.
This was a few months after we bought our house in 2006.

We love each other passionately and genuinely care about one another. We also have fights, stupid ones that are ridiculous and long drawn out ones that are miserable *FACT: every married couple fights, even Kate & William!* I think what has helped our relationship withstand 17 years together are several key components. We were extremely young when we started dating *I was 19 and Antz just turned 21* so we basically grew up together. We began our adulthood as a couple of naive kids so we were able to experience college, the beginning of our careers, traveling together, getting our first apartment, buying cars, paying bills, and learning how to be adults together. We approach life with a sense of humor. We are immature on the inside and we don’t take ourselves too seriously. *insert fart joke here* We also trust each other implicitly. It can be hard to be completely honest and deal with another person’s feelings but we have to let each other know when there’s food stuck in their teeth, you know? That’s the secret to our success, and not being too afraid to tell the truth because we are afraid of the others reaction. If you trust your partner, you can confront issues without worrying about a backlash or resentment. I’m no expert *well duh* but it took trial and error, therapy and years of struggle to get to where we are now.

Happiness, sadness, anger, joy, passion, selfishness, sacrifice, hurt,
hopefulness, gratefulness, thoughtlessness, motivation and despair are
all equally valid emotions when you love someone. Another great piece of advice I could give anyone is follow the give-take rule. For example our give-take is I do 99% of the driving but Antz does 99% of the cooking. He allows me to control the telly remote and I leave the ceiling fan on for him at night. You have to tolerate some idiosyncrasies in a marriage that may drive you mad *cleaning his ears with q-tips addiction* but keep in mind, you may have something just as annoying *my online shopping addiction* so try to keep things balanced. It’s easier to be forgiving when someone is tolerant of your own shortcomings like my whining, complaining, impatience, selfishness…I could go on and on, hopefully you get my point.

I don’t know how I was so lucky to marry a guy as awesome as Anthony. He came into my life for a reason at the perfect time. We fit together like two puzzle pieces. Our relationship is like when you get two rainbow sprinkle chocolate balls together while playing candy crush. He has always set the bar high for being an amazing husband, he always finds ways to surprise me and he still gives me butterflies in my stomach when we kiss. Corny I know but he is fucking rad!

Two of my favorite films that are so incredible truthful and poignant about  relationships are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Anniversary Party.

Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming directed, wrote and starred in The Anniversary Party. They only had 19 days to shoot it, and it feels more like a play than a film, but the subject matter, the writing and the acting is amazing. The cast is incredible, Jennifer Beals, Parker Posey, John C. Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jane Adams *
she’s in both films* Real life married couple Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates are playing a married couple and their real life children are playing their children. If you haven’t seen either of these, I insist you do! I have experienced every emotion *well almost every, since infidelity has never been an issue for us*  that is portrayed in these films. I know it may seem silly to compare real life to a movie but these characters are so relatable about showing the complexities of real relationships. I adore the cast of both films. Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey play an astonishingly authentic couple. I was shocked they didn’t get Oscars for their acting because I fucking cried my ass off when I first saw it. Michel Gondry is a brilliant director but I’m sure most of your may have never heard of him. He is French and has the greatest imagination in film making. He started directing music videos for *Björk, Cibo Matto, Daft Punk & Beck* and he directed The Science of Sleep which is also a great movie about love.

So that was my weird tangent about marriage, we are celebrating our 11 years happily married and two movie reviews to boot. While I’m at it, The Pie Hole is the yummiest place in Los Angeles, hands down.

I had the chocolate crostata pie with sea salt caramel crust for breakfast, HEAVEN!

Happy Wednesday!!

Let me know what you think about those movies.

Fourth of July Weekend Wrap-up

Oh man, so much summer fun crammed into 4 days! Aimee came over to eat and we redneck-ed it in the backyard with booze
and watching Liv splash around in her pool. I got a little too much sun but it
was a good time.

MEAT!!!

Once again Highland Park did not disappoint as the fireworks capital of Los Angeles. It really sounded like bombs going off every second.

This is as crazy with fireworks as I get!

Mr Mailman brought me two much anticipated *as well as one unexpected* deliveries.

I ordered these guys back in May, they were totally worth the wait! Freshly Picked Moccasins
Liv’s Third year Shutterfly book arrived!

Her book turned out lovely
Stephanie, Carlos & Sophie Bloom sent Liv a special birthday package of gifts. She was super stoked! Thanks guys!!

Friday we decided to have an impromptu picnic in the park and then check out the California Science Center

I love the Parisian vibe at Barnsdall Art Park
Liv challenged Daddy to a race
It was fun but my phone died so I didn’t get many photos. It was cool to see the Endeavour space shuttle in person.
Nerd Fact: Endeavour had 25 successful flight during it’s 19 years of service.
It’s like 50 times the size than it looked when it flew over our house last year

Antz took this rad shot

This photo of us came out pretty lame, it was bad lighting in there.
We bought Liv a space shuttle toy, we tried to teach her how to salute.

I couldn’t resist stopping by the childhood house of Don Draper.

I’ve seen it tons of times since it’s located on historic Carroll Street *one of my favorite places in LA*

Friday night we hung out with Story & Chris for pizza and homemade peach cobbler *which was perfection, Story*. They gave Antz the raddest birthday present, these adorable Adventure Time toys.

Chris acting a fool as usual

Saturday we went to our nephew & niece’s daughter’s *Cayce, Ann-Marissa & Chayanne* 1st birthday party. It was a super fun pool party.

Antz made this gift wrapping magic
The pool was AH-MAZ-ING!
So now I want an in-ground trampoline super bad
Lemme tell ya, this guy is a great workout!
Chayanne is such a sweetie pie!
Liv was swimming up a storm, she’s very comfortable in the pool.
Grandma Debra and the birthday girl
Grandpa Darwin signing her birthday puppy
I love this idea *I wrote on the puppy’s feet*
Liv was inseparable with her friend Jianna!
Everyone helped Chayanne open her presents
She’s on the verge of walking any day now
I tried to get a photo of the girls hugging but all I got was their golden curls. We’re going to plan a playdate soon.

Antz was sweet enough to watch Liv for me so I could go see This is the End with Story and Chris. It was hilarious and I spotted Joe Manganiello *Alcide* at the theater.

I’m always on celeb watch!

Sunday we took it easy, breakfast with Leslie & Stephen at Cindy’s.

Liv & Nina

This afternoon we stopped by Antz Mom’s to visit relatives who are in town.

We feel like we’ve seen everyone we know this weekend. So happy we have a week with no commitments to relax. How was your weekend?

Antz Birthday Weekend Wrap Up

We have been on a sabbatical for the past four days. My lovely husband turned 38 and we celebrated and hiked the desert hills.

Don’t worry folks, he doesn’t have a mohawk, this photo was taken years ago

His old fridge in his office at work needed replacing so we bought him a bigger version for keeping his favorite drinks *Diet peach Snapple* cold.

I love his butt birthday card *I’m butt #3*

We had a delish home cooked birthday feast.

Thank God for air conditioning since it was super hot. My Mom, Liv and I got in the hot tub which even though it was 80 degrees, felt great. Liv is learning how to blow bubbles in the water now. So that’s as close to a pool as I got.

All my outdoor fun plans *beach, picnic at the Silverlake meadow* went out the window when it was close to 100 degrees. Antz was stationed under the air conditioning vents. We managed to take Liv to the movies. I had to snap this photo of the adorable little Mike Wazowski *don’t worry, I was sitting in the last row and turned my brightness all the way down, nothing irritates me more than when someone is on their bright phone during a movie*

I noticed by the thousands of photos of this exact same image on Instagram, I’m not the only one who had this idea. Monsters University was really good, I highly recommend it. I also bought The Great & Powerful Oz on DVD for Liv. We took her to see it at the movies and even though I was concerned it would be too scary for her, she LOVED it. Antz even made her a paper version of Glinda’s crown and wand *after she begged us to buy her one everyday*

*I’m not even joking, she wears her Cinderella dress and glass slippers all day, every day!*

Antz and I saw World War Z last week and it was entertaining. There are parts, particularly the ending that will disappoint, but anything with Brad Pitt keeps my attention *I like his greybeard stoner face*

I was hoping to have a BBQ for the 4th of July but now we don’t think it’s gonna happen. We took our cat Lola to the vet and she had an unexplainable accident that ended up with her getting stitches on her leg. Now she is on two medications that we have to give her 4 times a day. If you have ever given meds to a cat orally, you’ll know how miserable we all are. Seeing her limp around the house is sadders but we have to keep her inside until she heals so she cries to go out all the time. It sucks, my poor Lola in her cone of shame.

I haven’t been so happy happy either, I have been working on Liv’s 3rd scrapbook on Shutterfly. Her first 2 books were a breeze to make but for some weird reason when I used the editing tools on Firefox *which is my preferred browser* it kept crashing. So I open it in Safari, it works but I can’t upload photos from my Instagram account, d’oh! So let’s just say, I am having a hard time finishing it. Then I have 550 photos to edit and of course I want to use every single one of them but the book has only 45 pages and I’m trying to condense. You guys know how I’m all about quantity and not so consistent with quality!

Well, since I’m on nurse duty this week, I may not be able to blog often. Just know I’m here, thinking of completing my Summer Bucket List.

  1. As always, Beach days!!
  2. Last year we didn’t make it to a concert at the Hollywood bowl, so I’m super stoked to see Björk at the Bowl June 11th!! *Björk was AMAZING!!*
  3. Attend Liv’s school Summer Masquerade Serenade *We had a wonderful time*
  4. Grill this!!
Gedb69aZ3McnihAnsQufpOqU.jpeg:Amazon:photo
Rosemary and beef kebabs

    5.  Have a family BBQ *Possibly Maybe soon?*
    6.  Braid my hair *Done.

         8.  Have dinner at Knotts Berry Farm.  *I love their biscuits with Knott’s jam*
         9.  Attend Tom & Jess’s beach wedding in July.

        10. Attend the Renegade Craft Fair *one of my favorite summer events*
        11. Have a friends BBQ *and make a signature cocktail*
        12. Cook at least 5 recipes from my Pinterest board *and use my new crock pot*
        13. Take Olivia to see Monster’s University
        14. Stage an intervention for Amanduh Bynes *we’re all concerned*
        15. Buy this adorable sun hat for me, a Mexican dress for Olivia and Antz could use
              new sunglasses too!

Kate Spade Hello Sunshine raffia sun hat *it’s sold out at Nordstrom 🙁
      16.  Go bike riding on the Strand

Bonus: Swim/tan as often as possible!!

Kanye/Wes Anderson Mashup

Okay, by now you know how much I lurve Mr. Wesley Anderson. I own almost all of his amazing films and have all the soundtracks in heavy rotation on my ipod but I’m not so much a fan of kanye *I find him and his girlfriend obnoxious, narcissistic and angry*. As much as I dislike the guy, he is featured everywhere, on songs I love with Jay Z, on my favorite birthday/BFF song and now he’s on this rad tumblr, Kanye Wes. I am compelled to like it because yeezus’ lyrics and the images are a collaboration made in heaven. Please do enjoy.

Brilliant!

The Best….

Documentaries I have seen.

This is one of my most favorite documentaries. I am a huge fan of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Buff Monster and Invader *I even went on a Banksy hunt in LA* As much as I dispise tagging, I adore street art.

Exit Through the Gift Shop

Brilliant and insightful look into public charter schools and the admission process. All parents should be required to watch this film.

Waiting for Superman

I saw this fun film twice when I was preggers. Super adorable!

Babies

If you enjoy fashion, this is a great peek into the behind the scenes madness of putting together the most popular month’s issue of Vogue. I immediately fell in love with Grace Coddington.

The September Issue

As a kid, my Mom bought me an origami set and I spent hours trying to perfect my paper cranes. I have been fascinated with the art ever since. It’s mind blowing what some people can create with a piece of ordinary paper.

Between the Folds

The film is incredible. Tucked away in a tiny spot in a train station, this sushi restaurant is home to the world’s best sushi chef. I hope to one day dine there.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi

This is one of the first documentaries I saw in theaters. Michael Moore is the Quentin Tarantino of docs. I love his ballsy moves and he asks the right questions *although no one seems to have the right answer* Riveting.

Bowling for Columbine

As controversial and neurotic as he is, I still like Woody. He’s a great filmmaker and he’s into jazz. This is a entertaining film.

Woody Allen A Documentary

This guy is all kinds of awesome

Bill Cunningham New York

I LOVE this guy!! You will spend most of the movie holding your breath and saying this guy is crazy but it’s a lovely film.

Man on a Wire

*Update* I had to add one more. I was in tears while watching this documentary about the life of various aged ballet dancers around the world. They danced for coveted positions with prestigious ballet schools and companies. It simultaneously makes me want to put Liv in a serious ballet curriculum so she could possibly one day become a ballerina if she chose but also want to keep her from the horrors most dancers endure *rigourous, painful training, expensive, overly-competitive and ruining your feet!* Right now she loves going to ballet class and as long as it’s fun and we can afford it, we’ll keep at it.

These are all available on instant Netflix. Happy Thursday!

Happy Happy, Joy Joy!

Today was epic. I am pleased to announce our cabinets have been installed in our new kitchen. I wish I could share the photos but please hold your horses until the grand reveal *we’re looking at next Thursday*

So far this process has been relatively stress-free. We did go over budget a tad, but we also saved money unexpectedly. Now, by all means, I did have my share of stressing out, for instance, the floor guys almost made me cry but I’m happy with the end result and I spazzed out more than necessary.

Sorry for all the Ron Burgundy memes but I love that guy *and I’m looking forward to the sequel*

I’ve got to head to Home Depot and Ikea now. I’m looking forward to Mum’s day this weekend and finally having a functioning kitchen next week. YAY!!!

You stay classy San Diego!

Is this thing on?

Testing…testing? Ahem, I love blogging. It’s fun for me to come up with what I consider to be funny or informative or even embarrassing posts to share with the kind folks on the internet.

Haters Gonna Hate

I love having a journal to look back at all the fun things I did, food I ate or shit I bought. I also can see my growth and push myself to step out of my comfort zone and make my crazy random dreams into accomplishments. Here’s the thing, I started blogging back in 2008 with the intention to connect with other people in my same situation. I was kinda on the fence about having a bebe, along with my insecurity about being an awesome parent *which I still have* and I was trying to make my house a lovely place to live, but I was really seeking advice and support. To start a dialogue with people who can share their stories and experiences. My friends and family are always unconditionally supportive of me but I wanted an unbiased opinion. Now five years later and 800+ posts, I wonder is anybody out there? I know my dear friends are checking in to see what we’re up to but I love to hear from my other readers? I hope you come here to be entertained or maybe even laugh with me *not at me* on my zany adventures.

Blogging feels like an open mic night and I can hear a pitter of applause and a few chuckles in the room, I just can’t see any faces with that bright spotlight shining in my face.

Please feel encouraged to leave comments. Tell me about your day! Where are you from? Seen any good movies or eaten at any awesome places? I would love to get to know you lovelies. My goal to make Violently Happy a better community and I need some of your constructive criticism. What works? What sucks? Aside from my deplorable grammar and constant run-on sentences. I may be am paranoid that the lack of comments could be that no one is reading my blog and the 190 page views I get everyday are from Aimee, my Mom and Evelyn *love you fools!*
So, I’ll start…
Salut, I’m Liz. I am a stay at home shopper/Mom. I am addicted to Pinterest, GIRLS, shopping online and these two heavenly creatures.
Playing dragons
I hope to learn French one day and I am planning to take Olivia to France for a month next year. This makes me laugh. I’m embracing my new 4 gray hairs and I need a pedicure like you wouldn’t believe. I hope to one day attend alt summit *look how cool it is* and Camp Mighty with my BFF. I’m trying to convince my Mom to buy this house. The last song I listened to was this chick
I really hate the smell of raw onions and I can’t stand walking on the grass barefoot *weird, I know* I’d love it if you follow me on Vine if you use it. So far I have a bunch of random creepy guys following me and I wish I could get rid of them, cause dude, you look creepy!
Oh! Last night I saw Zero Dark Thirty with the hubs. Wowie! I wasn’t expecting to like as much as I did. I wasn’t so blown away *see what I did there?* about The Hurt Locker and military films aren’t my thing but Kathryn Bigelow is brilliant. Jessica Chastain was really acting her skinny ass off. Now I really want to see her in Mama. My rad friend Kim sums it up best:
I
loved the part when she was like ” Yeah!” and they’re like “whuh?” so
she’s all “Sheeeeet!” then they’re like “derp?” So she goes “Fo REALZ,
dicks!
” So they’re finally like “Ooooooh.” That was intense.”
Enjoying your Saturday so far? We’re cleaning out the kitchen to make way for the big remodel that is pushing me to the brink of INSANITY!!

Want / Need / Wear / Read

Once again, I’m borrowing this feature *please be flattered* from Bleubird but it’s so cute. It’s pretty self-explanatory please, feel free to borrow from me…

Something I need: Bella Dots Toaster from Target

Something I want *Liv* to wear: Leather Moccasins by Freshly Picked *she’s outgrown her Minnetonka moccasins*

Something I want to read: SC 2003: (Some Pictures from This Past Year)

Of course I would choose the only book no longer in print and impossible to find. Yet, I’m so fascinated by Sofia Coppola.

Sofia-Coppola-by-Peter-Lindbergh-for-LUomo-Vogue-September-2010

She appears to be a quiet ingenue *rare for a Hollywood socialite* but shows her voice is quite loud and has a great eye for stunning visual and vulnerable characters in her films. Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides & Marie Antoinette are my favorites. I will keep an eye out for it next time I visit Wackos.

So tell me lovelies, what are your Want/Need/Wear/Read?

Hello First week of 2013

My batteries are all charged and I’ve got a skip in my step towards making my resolutions into reality. I’ve got my first scheduled Wii workout tonight. My plan is to get 3 workouts and 2 walks a week. I had to postpone last week’s workout since I was sicky. Now my lovely Liv has what appears to be a light flu. She’s sneezy, coughy, fevery, stuffy, achy, runny nose and has a serious case of the sleepys. I’ve been giving her liquids, soup and toast. So far toast and fruit is all she eats but she’s not barfing which is good news, I suppose. Unfortunately, I don’t think she’ll go to school tomorrow. I’m sure by Thursday she’ll be back to her bright and cheery self.

Outdoor garden area, ready for a party!
Here’s a sneak peek!

I have made progress in the Great Birthday Plans. I found the perfect venue, within a reasonable budget and accommodates most of our needs. Antz is going to take a day off this month so we can check it out since it’s closed for private parties on weekends. I hope all is well and I can book it so we can secure our date *June is a very popular birthday month* I was going to order Party Packs from Hot Dog on a Stick but the new venue includes pizza and who doesn’t like pizza? That takes a great load off my plate since I no longer have to find someone to pick up the food and all the expense of keeping it warm, and the condiments involved with hot dogs. I’m going to make lemonade myself and use my new lemonade dispenser. The adults will be happy to know I can serve beer and wine at her party. It’s all coming together and before I know it, June will be here. This morning I found the perfect 3rd birthday party outfit for Liv but I have to hold off ordering any clothes for her since she grows like a weed and everything I’ve bought so far she’s on the verge of outgrowing. It is ridiculously cute in an edgy-but-sweet way *not your typical tutu with a shirt that says I’m 3* I’m super excited for her party!!

So tomorrow I will meet with our plumber, Martin, to get his feedback on the faucet I bought. Our existing sink is only 29 inches wide and the new sink will be 36 inches so we are going to reconfigure all the cabinets layout. In March we’re having Ikea come to our house to measure our crooked walls. I’m so happy we aren’t installing those cabinets ourselves because we have the slanty-iest house in the world. I call it my Pop-up book house. We’ll attempt to do the backsplash ourselves since we have experience installing waterproof drywall and tile, so I’m pretty confident. My Mom has a hardwood floor guy to refer to us and all we need to find now is an electrician *who doesn’t charge $200 per hour*

I’m pretty geeked out for Antz & my date night in a few weeks. We’re gonna see Life of Pi. I wasn’t gonna see it until I read the book *which I hear is pretty awesome* but life with a toddler makes reading a rare occurrence. My friend Nic said it was visually stunning.

Happy Monday!
