The little kitchen that could!

Good morning lovelies!

It feels like an eternity since I’ve blogged but I am back and with exciting news to share! Our sweet little cucina made her debut on theKitchn this morning. I can’t help but cringe at our before photos, yet it’s funny how so in love I was with that awful orangish/yellow kitchen when we first bought our house seven years ago. I really, really love my new kitchen.

That fabric swatch we picked up at the Ban.do garage sale has really functioned well for us! A steal at $7!
I’m normally not a huge fan of blue but I love how the colors pop in such a neutral palette.

It would be rad if you head over the theKitchn and leave a comment on what you think.

Enough about our kitchen, I finally have some photos I salvaged from my Instagram since I still can’t upload any to my laptop *so lame!* Last weekend we went to Liv’s good friend Jianna’s 5th birthday party at an indoor party place called Scooter’s Jungle. It was super fun, the adults were playing just as hard as the kiddos. Here are a video of us being dorks on my Instagram, Super slide.

Ready to party!

Eagerly waiting to go inside
We kicked each other’s butt in table tennis

Thanks Nicole & James for the wicked fun party

Ready for the best face ever?!!

My kid is super rad!

Thursday Liv’s class had a pumpkin carving party at school. I baked spookie cookies for the potluck.

What would any typical three year girl want to carve in her pumpkin? A vampire of course!

She kept calling the pumpkin guts gross, that’s my kid!

Mwah ah hah!

 Have a lovely day!

Our Kitchen Remodel Part Two

Here’s where it gets real. I was terribly stressed out over the Ikea delivery which weirdly was scheduled for a Sunday. The ape who called me to confirm our appt. put that unneeded drama in my head by telling me we will have 3 boxes that weighted 800lbs. Umm, okay Ikea is famous for their efficient packaging but a dishwasher, a sink, cabinets, countertops and a faucet condensed into 3 boxes sounds crazy, right? Plus our living room already looked like this.

Oh man, nothing makes you feel more of a Hoarder of junk than emptying out your cabinets.

Also the crew was moving all our appliances in the living room while they worked on the floors so we were running out of space. Antz and I thought we had two options, take everything out of the boxes and store them in the garage until our cabinet installation or put them on our deck and stand guard for 5 days so no one would steal them.

Turns out when the delivery guys showed up, they had more than three boxes and the heaviest box was the dishwasher. Nowhere near the 800lbs the guy on the phone told me.

These guys ran the boxes up and down our stairs like they were carrying feathers, I don’t know how they do it!

So crisis averted {LESSON LEARNED} Don’t spazz out unless you have to. I was being overly neurotic and sensitive. Most of the time things works out so being worried isn’t productive. Besides, the floors were stressful enough.

The floors!! Rene gave us such an incredible deal on all the other stuff we needed to get done that we were able to splurge on having our floors professionally refinished. It made sense to spend the money because A. we would have spent time and money just to ruin the floors ourselves, since we learned from a previous lesson, know when to hire a professional and B. with our Ikea new cabinets and all the work being done in the kitchen, why leave the floors looking crappy?

Then I got a call from Rene {LESSON LEARNED} When you get a call from your contractor, it’s usually bad news. He told us our 90 year old floors were done. There was no way he could refinish them in their condition. He then pushed the dark clouds away and brought in the sunshine and told us he would install brand new hardwood floors for the same price as the refinish job. Rene can in fact make miracles happen!

Our floors before *real horrorshow*
These guys were fast, they installed the floors in 6 hours
They smelled so nice too!

The new floors did push our schedule back a week. We had to allow the wood to settle so we got to live with unfinished floors for some time. During that time we finally chose a wall color.

I wanted pure white walls for a cleaner look

Antz was right, we needed some contrast from the white trim so I love the Whetstone Grey color he chose. I am so happy Rene fixed our bumpy old plaster walls. Now they are as smooth as a baby’s bottom.

We got a fresh coat of chalkboard paint too

I almost started falling in love with the idea of light floors *blame Pinterest*

Antz talked me out of keeping the floors light. So Friday morning the guys came back to stain the floors. I couldn’t peek through the doorway like usual since they had to seal the room, so I could only look through the windows from the back door.

Then I almost shit my pants when I saw this!

Now to their credit, we never really specified the shade of the floors with the floor guys, only Rene. I was adamant about them being dark but this looked too dark to me. The camera lighting isn’t showing it but all I saw BLAAAACK. I, of course begin to have a panic attack, texted Antz frantically, then called Aimee and began to cry. My beautiful new floors have been ruined. I was inconsolable. The guys working didn’t speak much English so while I’m showing them this photo on my phone and trying to communicate in Spanglish, all I could get across was “TOO DARK!” The guy was like, this is what you said you wanted, this is Ebony. No way, I do not like Ebony and I want them lighter right pronto! Finally Antz came home from work to calm me down and he told the guy we wanted more brown and a more warmer tone. I was ready to have them rip out the floors and start from scratch but the guys were giving me the side eye. He somehow got a light bulb over his head after talking to Rene on the phone and did this.

They were a little sloppy on my baseboards but they repainted them

YAY!! Holy cow, my heart left my throat and I finally chilled the fart out.

Shiny Happy People holding hands!!

{LESSON LEARNED} Know when to micromanage. I left the floors guys alone too long and it almost bit me in the ass. If I didn’t see the floors when I did we would have had the wrong color floors and not been happy with them. I wish the floor guys would have let me know they were ready to stain and showed me the color first, but it’s up to me to watch them more closely.

So after waiting 3 days my floors were dry and just perfect.

I am so happy we went dark. They really look rad. Now was finally time for the cabinet installation. We planned to use the company Ikea works with *Signature something-or-other* who came out for a quote. Ikea has a pricing guideline but when installing countertops they needed to see the space in person to give us a more detailed quote. I was visiting my Mom with Liv when the company came out for the quote but they guy was sure it would be close to our budget. Then I got an email which immediately gave me a stomachache. Double of what I planned to spend and they were charging us tax to install cabinets!! No freaking way! I went to Yelp and started looking for cabinet installers. That’s when I saw the Ikea installation company’s reviews. Not good, all one stars and everyone had a negative complaint about the poor work and the price gouge. I found a company with great reviews that gave me an over the phone estimate that was within my budget. {LESSON LEARNED} Do your research. I could have gone with the Ikea recommended company but I looked around and found someone much better on my own. Mike was fabulous. He built and installed everything beautifully, quickly and even built my island for me.

I still tipped them even though they rocked out to Bon Jovi while they worked *and it wasn’t Living on a Prayer either*
This was the only configuration we could come up to fit the tight space after weeks of planning at Ikea and I love how it turned out!
I had to get a single bowl sink instead of the double but it’s stellar
hello, love of my life!!

Can you believe this is my kitchen? I love it so much!!

Note to Ikea; make your island/carts come with optional casters. We had to buy ours from Home Depot and ask Rene to install them.

The finishing touches are coming soon. I’ll include a source list of all our goodies in the finale post. HAPPY HAPPY!!

The OC what a bummer

We spent all of Sunday in Orange County. Besides Balboa Island and Disneyland, the OC is not my favorite place to be. I don’t know what it is about that place but it rubs me the wrong way. It’s a weird unexplainable vibe but I don’t know why I give that place such a bad rep, it has one of the best malls in California, The South Coast Plaza. I haven’t been there in ten years *I bought my wedding dress from there* As you know a few weeks ago I ordered our cabinet knobs, a new light fixture and the drawer pulls from Pottery Barn online. Lo and behold I received the package but no drawer pulls. I checked my order status and it says in process. I waited a week later and I noticed the amount for the pulls were credited to my bank account. Okay, that’s strange I checked my emails and saw nothing from PB. I go to the site and discover my order status went from being in stock, to in process and now it says backordered until 7/16/2013!! Now I have high expectations from a store like Pottery Barn but to not send me an email to notify me that an item I already purchased 3 weeks ago was on backorder, that seems shady. I called customer service and they gave me a spiel about there being thousands of orders everyday and they don’t have time to notify the customer. Well, I’m fully expecting some kind of discount for my trouble and they would send me the pulls immediately but she gave me a big fat “We’re sorry” and she tells me I can go to the Costa Mesa store and buy them there. Ummm, okay PB that’s totally uncool of you. So I got dissed really hard by them I had to drive all the way to the South Coast Plaza even though there are like 30 Pottery Barns near me. Lucky for them, I had to go out there to pick up a few things from West Elm anyway. I picked up Antz Mom to join us and we made a day of it. I got to the store and almost had a heart attack when I looked for the pulls and there weren’t any. Fortunately, they found some in the back but then I opened one to make sure it was the right color to find the screws were missing. Sheesh, Pottery Barn, get your shit together! You totally left a sour taste in my mouth after years of being a loyal customer.

We then went to West Elm and found everything I needed. That place rocks! Most of the items were on sale online but they match the price in store too and a few items were on sale that I didn’t expect to be. I saved so much I picked up an extra goody for the kitchen.

New things makes me happy happy

We had lunch at the Rainforest Cafe which is a totally cheesy, touristy place but Liv loved it. There was a guy making balloon animals and this dude was like the Lord of Balloons. I asked him if he majored in balloon making in college because there was nothing he couldn’t make. He told me his trade secret, it’s all in the quality of the balloons. He made Ariel The Little mermaid, Spiderman, the Sistine Chapel…he was fascinating to watch in action.

It was very difficult to get her to eat with so many animal distractions

We drove down to Laguna Beach but it was too chilly to walk on the beach. It was a nice trip but I’ll stay up north where I belong. So a week has been added to our timeline but I’m so happy with the progress. If anyone is looking for a contractor or handyman, email me. Pottery Barn…you really need to improve your customer service because I’m not a happy camper!

Our new kitchen floors!

Beautiful is an understatement. The crew was here at 8 am this morning and by 2pm, we had brand new kitchen floors. The house is full of the sweet smell of fresh wood and I’m finding it surreal walking into our kitchen without the familiar sounds of old floorboards creaking.

The floors looked like this on Friday

 All done!!

They are so pretty I want to breakdance on them!
Liv says “Mom, I like your new floors!”
Antz and I are even contemplating leaving them this natural color. Rene *our rad contractor* said it would be harder to maintain and we already chose a dark stain. I do want a distressed finish, so we may take a hammer to them. We’ll see.
These are our old *literally 90 years* drain pipes
This little hole is not where you will find Alice and the white rabbit but this…
The new drain pipes that no longer back up in the bathtub when we do laundry and allows us to flush the toilet, do laundry and turn on all the sinks at once without any change in pressure!!

Sadly, this will most likely be the last update I share until the kitchen is finished. I want it to be a grand reveal and I am terrible at keeping secrets. I may leak a few photos on my Instagram.

This is how I’m feeling at the moment!

Oh, this man’s voice gives me shivers!!

Just a few hiccups

I am starting to believe there is no such thing as an easy peasy remodel. I am totally happy with the work, the mere speed and the compromise of our contractor, Rene. However, we have to pay an additional $400 for the wall patching/painting. To be fair, our walls feel like they have braille written on them and are as crooked as a dog’s hind leg so it’s a big job to make them appear straight.

Doesn’t it seem that most kitchens have a pastel wall color?
Smooth as butter!

Guess who still hasn’t chosen a wall color? This girl! We are going to look at a new store because I’ve exhausted every single color choice Home Depot sells. In the long run, $400 is a bargain for painting the walls *since it would take us a week and look like shit and only take them a few days* but that $400 has to come from somewhere. So it happens to be my fucking metal stools and new curtains budget!! I’m optimistic about it though, we are selling Liv’s stroller and once we do, I’ll have my $400 back for my stools and fabric for making new curtains. Yesterday I had to buy house paint since they had to cut through the wood siding to access the bathroom pipes. Yay! Another $73 on stupid paint.

Pretty incredible before and after

Today the guys are working on our fence. Tomorrow, they are installing our new hardwood floors. Somebody buy our rad stroller so I can buy my stools!!!

Our Craigslist ad

I was planning to have a much needed date night and go see Room 237 tonight with my sweetums but after playing at the Laemmele *aka the old folks movie theater* for weeks, it’s no longer playing. Boo! Maybe we’ll just go to dinner, I’ve been wanting steak and I could use a drink!

Happy Friday!!

Kitchen Progress…at last!

Monday began like this…

IMG_2729

It took 2 hours to remove our 90 year old cabinets

Awesome hole right?

Even more progress yesterday afternoon…

IMG_2781

Oh, you beautiful drywall and 3 new electrical outlets!

IMG_2830

Our grody ninety year old galvanized pipes were almost completely closed with gunk.

IMG_2786

Sweet copper pipes! We got a new fancy shmancy Delta Showerhead too.
DSC_0121Our pipes to our washing machine were the worst. They were installed in reverse so when the laundry was set to use hot water, it would be cold and the cold water took hours to come out. One load of laundry would take two hours.

IMG_2784

This may look unexciting but a majority of our remodel budget went towards new copper pipes. Our house was on it’s last leg in the plumbing department. By Thursday we should have wonderful water pressure!!
Sunday’s Ikea delivery went smoothly and we somehow managed to fit everything in the living room.
IMG_2719
IMG_2725

I am so excited about our dishwasher!

The delivery guys ran the boxes up our stairs like they weighed nothing. In two weeks, the new cabinets, countertop, sink, faucet and dishwasher will be installed. So far, everything is on schedule and going according to plan. *knock on wood* We had a few hiccups but nothing major. Our amazing contractor Rene told us that our floors are in such bad shape, we can’t refinish them. *Boo* So now we are getting new floors that he will install on top of the old floor. Which means I have to find new floors that look old and distressed.

This is me…

I can’t wait until I can start decorating! I found our stools at a fraction of the cost. We are still undecided on the wall paint.

IMG_2742

I like the bright white *Marshmallow white #2 but I do agree with Antz, we may need some contrast from the white trim. I’m not sold on these colors yet, the natural looks like dirty white.

We are going to Jill’s Paint in Atwater Village this weekend to see what they have. This has been the hardest to choose so far.

Happy Kitchen Renovations, so far!

I know I haven’t been posting regularly lately but we have been busy bees. So much progress has taken place in the last week in our kitchen. We still have 3 more weeks of scheduled work.

I can’t give everything away now but here’s a few sneak peeks.

Rene and *sorry I forgot the other dude’s name* working hard so we don’t have to!
I’m so happy we chose to keep the uppers. It saved so much money and they look 1000 times better!
What a difference some paint makes.

I’m super excited about the new kitchen! The next few weeks will be busy. Our demo crew starts on Monday, then the plumbing. I am sure once the plumbing is repaired we will use less water since it takes forever now to wash dishes or do laundry since the pressure sucks so bad. I’m crossing my fingers our water bill goes down significantly.

Today Ikea is delivering our cabinets. All 800lbs! We cleared some space in the living room.

We cut this pile in half, by donating, selling and recycling a bunch of junk

But the new cabinets are gonna have to chill in the garage until the floors are done. I did save some money by finding a new company to install our cabinets but I promise to post a more detailed account of the remodel experience once everything is finished. So from here on out, I’ll share a few photos of progress but Antz is swearing me to secrecy until we can do a grand reveal. I am playing around with the Nikon *hello ISO levels* to make sure I get some amazing after photos.

Oh! I almost forgot to mention, Liv went to her school’s first Parent’s Night Out last Friday. Once a month, they offer a night when we can drop her off in her pajamas at school for pizza, playing with her friends and a movie. It’s funny they chose Wreck It Ralph since that’s her favorite movie *at the moment*. See how awesome her school is? While she was at her slumber party, we went to a cocktail mixer hosted by the *rad* parent’s of one of the boys in Liv’s class. It was awesome since I haven’t had a chance to individually meet the parent’s from her class. I know most of the kids, but we really enjoyed being kid-free and meeting everyone. Cindy and Steve’s house was incredible. Now I’m thinking of sending her to Parent’s Night out every month.

Can you believe this month is almost over? I can’t. Time always flies when I’m in the midst of a project.

Happy Sunday!

Kitchen Remodel Update Week One

Last you saw of the kitchen we were testing wall paint choices and choosing the tile for the backsplash.

Neither of these blew my skirt up.

Antz worked his butt off for the past 2 days and sanded the years of gross paint off of the cabinets. Our kitchen went from this.

To this.

I’m estimating it will take 3 weeks to finish the kitchen. I’m still not sure which wall color we will use. These cabinets are a mess. Antz said he found at least 5 layers of paint, like a jawbreaker. I can’t wait until they are painted lily white.

While I was away at my Mom’s house I ordered the new light fixture and knobs from Pottery Barn. Our poor mailman has been delivering boxes to us everyday now. Our living room is looking like a storage room.

The new cabinets are being delivered this Sunday, YAY!! All 800lbs of boxes will be in our living room until May, BOO!! Now is a good time to donate, sell and throw away. With all this kitchen talk,  I am smitten with Diana from Our City Lights amazingly bright pink Hello Kitty themed kitchen.

I love her bold use of color and all the Hello Kitty accessories *Antz would never go for it* but I think it’s brilliant. Did you see the Royal Tenebaums artwork and the pink chalkboard door? She is my new blog crush.
Oh, isn’t it sweet to come home to something as lovely as this?

This beautiful gem is courtesy of my hubs, our world map looks quite sophisticated!

Happy Kitchen Renovation Day!

Well not quite, but Sunday we went to Home Depot *after waiting 48 hours for a guy to come over to give us a quote but never showed up, why is it so hard to get a quote?* and did some pre-reno shopping.

Sheesh, could this kitchen look anymore dark and depressing?

I wanted to find out about renting tools *tile wet saw, floor sanders, etc*. We went to our local Home Depot only to find out we had to go to another one because they didn’t rent tools from there, D’oh! Turns out I like the second HD much better. It’s a bigger store, really well stocked, not crowded at all *due it the store being practically hidden* and the salespeople were actually helpful and knowledgeable! Hooray!

We got a price list of the tools for rent. It’s pricier than I expected, but it’s cheaper than having a professional do the work. I am really bummed that Home Depot no longer carries my Goddess Martha Stewart paint. The paint guy suggested we try Glidden as a substitute so we bought some samples to test out on the walls this weekend.

We chose Natural Wicker for the walls and Toasted Mashmallow for the trim.

We also found the subway tile for the backsplash for only a fraction of the estimated cost I budgeted. Sweet!

I budgeted $350 for the backsplash tile, now we only going to spend about $50 for everything!
The store’s display wasn’t impressive. I wanted larger tiles but since it’s a Do-it-ourselves-on-a-budget project, I’ll take it.

I shopped the knobs and drawer pulls section since Ikea doesn’t have what I’m looking for.

The price is perfect but Goddess Martha is bumming me out with the dated nipple knob. I am over the brushed nickel style so I’m still on the hunt. I practically bought every style of knob to bring home to test out on the cabinets. I almost like these antique glass ones but Antz is not a fan.

Nah, these knobs are too dainty for the doors

It’s understandably difficult to imagine the new knobs on such fugly cabinets. You like that paint job?? I can’t even begin to think of how much work it will take to sand away years of poor paint jobs on those upper cabinets. My biggest concern is the brand new lower cabinets will make the old uppers look horrible. Oh well, if need be maybe next year we can get the uppers replaced, after we get the foundation fixed and the house painted, and the….and the….headache!

On a happier note, I picked up some strawberries to plant since the bugs ate our old patch.

My assistant gardener
The wildflower seeds we planted last year have finally filled in nicely
She’s wearing her new adorable Misha Lulu skirt

Then we headed to the park

And so begins the new life of DIY kitchen renovators!!

My Kitchen Remodel Nightmares

There’s a reason chef Gordon Ramsey named his popular British telly show Kitchen Nightmares. I have been literally having nightmares about our kitchen remodel. I have the hardest choice to make.

Current kitchen
I curse whoever chose this awful orange paint for our kitchen. That’s the least of our troubles.

The decision is the most accurate display of me wanting to put the cart before the horse. Or in my case, put the kitchen before the foundation.

Do I take care of the foundation repair now or continue to ignore it and remodel the kitchen even though our house moves and it could compromise the remodel?

I have a long list of boring, stupid, expensive and absolutely nothing that is attractive to my eye, repairs that need to be made to our house.

What we need to do:
Our foundation needs retrofitting/bolting. *or our house will fall down!*
Our chimney *remember this guy is pulling our house down* needs removing
Once the chimney is removed, we need to replace the wood siding and missing piece of the roof.
We have to replace our fence on the right side of our backyard.
We need to patch/paint our house.

She turned 90 on March 6th and she’s showing her age

We need to vent our dryer to the attic, *properly so our house doesn’t catch fire*
Our galvanized pipes need to be replaced
Install plumbing access *so the plumber doesn’t have to keep removing our siding as shown in the photo*
In order to do this, our plumber has to dig up about 1 ton of dirt that is under our house to access the kitchen pipes.

Here’s what I planned to do:
Get our plumbing fixed *as cheaply as humanly possible*
Have our kitchen wood floors professionally refinished and stained *now it looks like we’ll be DIYing the floors, if we even do the kitchen remodel*
New Ikea cabinets *lowers only*
New Ikea butcherblock countertops *keep in mind, we can’t put in new countertops, sink or dishwasher without installing new cabinets. Our old ones aren’t the right size or height*
New Ikea dishwasher
New Ikea sink/faucet
DIY subway tile backsplash
Paint the upper cabinets and new knobs
Paint the room *no idea what color yet but leaning towards white*
New island and stools
New light fixture *Pottery Barn*
Target and Anthropologie kitchen accessories
*new bedroom curtains
*new grill for the patio

I’m still waiting on estimates for our foundation & the fence but we’re looking at close to $30,000 in repairs vs $10,000 in improvements.

Obviously, I understand that the foundation is a serious issue and needs to be addressed, but it’s so darn expensive. *money we won’t recoup if we sell* I have unsuccessfully tried to take out a home equity loan or refinance because our house is still underwater *thanks real estate market*. Our inspector told us back in 2006, if it goes unaddressed, the house will fall, not today, maybe not tomorrow, but one day. So there’s that.

The backyard fence is a thorn in my side. Antz is like, we’re doing it, no if, ands or buts about it. But here’s me… B U T!

My Marais Stools!!

I am so illogical and I’m all about fluff. Cosmetic fixes! I’m a girl, I like pretty things!

What would you do? We have $10k to spend on a $40k problem. Don’t even start with save over time and do the kitchen later, Liv will be starting private school soon and we will forever be broke. I am over the numbers, I am over the foundation!

Stupid foundation in 2006
Today 🙁
Stupid chimney in 2006
Same stupid chimney today
I like having a chimney, it gives our house charm

We always found it odd that of all the windows we have,
the previous owners kept bars on the smallest one of the house. There
must have been a midget invasion in the past. We tried to remove them
but they are welded on.

Once I get the estimates, we’ll make up our minds. I have a headache that only a new dishwasher can cure.

Meanwhile I’m praying to this dude for a miracle.

Happy H(gr)ump day!
